Assuming you are confident of the authenticity, grade and that it has not been damaged or cleaned, $30 is a great price for that coin.

I would very weary of this coin, in this condition, for this price; FMV Prices (Good-MS60) 1857 G4 $23 VG8 $26 F12 $30 VF20 $45 XF40 $90 AU50 $168 AU53 $180 AU55 $198 AU58 $216 MS60 $330 http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/se...icesgd.shtmlIf your insides tell you to go for it, I would ensure that there is a return poicy on the coin. If it is an AS-IS, run!

No problema, I have been using numismedia to make more informed purchases for some time now, at the suggestion of a previous CCF member.

Price is really good pending your correct as to the condition of the coin. You mentioned it is from a reliable dealer so why would he give it to you for so low a price? Are you a steady customer?

One possibility is the coin dealer is not so interested in US coins as he might be in Canada. I certainly know my dealer in the US has no interest at all in Mexican coins so he probably would drastically underprice a coin from there as well, especially if he didn't have a convenient way to figure out the value.

You should look very closely at the surfaces of this coin before you buy it to see if it has been whizzed or altered to enhance its appearance. It is very unusual for an established dealer to mark a coin down to 1/3 of its normal retail value if there is nothing wrong with it. Ed ANA LM-3175

I guess the big question everyone here has is WHY is he selling it at that price? Does he specialize in Canadian coins and not really care about US ones? Is he giving you a special price because you are a regular customer (sort of a thank you for doing business with him)? Or is this coin just sitting in the display case with a $30 price tag surrounded by other US coins that are priced closer to normal retail prices? If it is the last one I'd be concerned. If he is like every other businessman on Earth he is selling coins to make money. You don't make money drastically underpricing a coin without a reason.
