Just recently bought this, posting early as its in the mail. I understand the broadstrike and double strike but how would the buffalo side happen with the beads / edge reeding. It is about 58mm at the widest point. Also what would be the year this was made? Thanks in advance..

It isn't a coin. It is a silver round. Looks they wanted to make it look like an error coin.

Coop is right. Because there is no government control over the private mints that strike these rounds, they can play all day long creating weird and interesting "errors". Any error made on purpose isn't an error - it's a curiosity.

Another thing is that because these pieces are undated, they could have been made any year.

I cannot answer the question at hand (about the reeding), but I do hope you didn't pay some sort of premium for this piece. It's worth two ounces of silver plus a small fee for the curiosity.

Nice photos, by the way.

Why do you think this has to be an "on purpose" error? Since these are made by the same methods as they make coins, they can suffer from the same errors. This is a double struck broad strike with a strike through of a fin that has broken off another round. While a multiple error would be unusual it isn't impossible.

These are made by the same process as coins and the possibilty of errors do occur (not on purpose) on rounds the same as they do on coins.

The broadstrike for example is the very same as the broadstrike on a coin, in both cases the collar is out of position allowing the plachet to expand when hit. Double and triple strikes have the same result.

Depending on the type of error the premium on these is pretty good, here are pictures that I found online to use as a reference of a few more errors for your view..

Bottom line.....Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..
