Well, I went and did it - I just had to get the Mt. Hood 5oz silver puck. I am glad I did but it is loose in the case that was shipped from the mint and can slide a little bit (I nearly had a heart attack when my 11 year old grabbed it and nearly shook it).

I can say this will most likely be the only one we get so I would like to store it in something more secure so it will not slide. How are y'all storing your SPs?

Thanks!

Since I am a bullion person storage other than safety is not a large concern. Now if it is something that would increase in numismatic value of course there would be more care.

Remember PM's are meant to speculate, numismatic is meant for a hobby.

That said I would check to see if air-tight (sp) offers one of their products or maybe another company does. These are probably the best at protecting the finish of silver coins.

I like this stuff:

But I also add some of this for more protection from the elements:

And for goodness sakes keep your finger prints off pure silver! I wear clean cotton gloves when handling pure silver.

I understand that I essentially bought bullion but the hobbiest in me does not feel like it is bullion (realistically all our coins will pass to my son as I can't bear to sell anything). The closest I come to speculation is how my son will deal with my stuff when I am gone!

Anyway, I will look at the air-tights - if anyone else has any other suggestions, please pretend I bought the collector's version and tell me what you are doing with yours.

Well I posted some where else on the coin forum I had put six or eight 2008 ASE into Air-Tites I was taking to a coin club thing then left them in. They got tarnished bad all around where the seal seats the coins and two even spread over the coin some.

The 200 ones I left in the APMEX ASE tubes they came in still all look like new coins still.

Thanks for the post about the tarnish strips maybe I will add one to each coin tube also.

Yes, or if it won't fit in the tube you could also wrap one around the outside of the tube and seal the whole thing in a container. The strips need to be changed out more often as they are exposed to air.

I have successfully stopped the puck from rattling by simply tightening the case around the edges. Seems the mint does not fully close these cases.
