I have about 100 Canadian One Dollar coins form 1970 to 1982.
Varied dates, all circulated.
I tried to sell them.
Coin Shop will not buy.
5 different banks in downtown Toronto would not take them.
What gives?
I accumulated all of these during the time they were issued.
Are my Canadian Dollars worthless?
Thanks.

Did you try the Royal Bank? They usually take those. I have no problem taking rolls to my local BMO branch here in Ottawa.

My advice however, is to spend them. I use them as tips at some local bars and the golf courses...

There is no reason why a bank won't take them. Make sure they are rolled. Take them to your own bank and deposit them into your account. Ask to speak with a manager if you have to.

That is just wrong for bank to deny legal tender. Have you tried spending them and do stores eccept them as payment? Could always put them on ebay. If I am not mistaken, those are 100% nickel.

RBC has some official role with the mint and does accept nickel dollars (and half dollars as well). Not every branch knows it, but the main branch in downtown Toronto definitely does.

I went to the RBC on King St. between Bay and Yonge yesterday.
They were the first of 5 to turn me down.
They were in clear plastic tubes.
I will try rolling them and deposit in an account.
The dollars are nickel.

Very strange that the bank would not take them. One would think that any of the big charted banks would. I agree with the other though, try an RBC.

I bank with C.I.B.C. My branch will take them.(Half dollars too!)
No,I didn't deposit any but asked if they had any dollars and halves I could have. They did and gave me all they had At face value of course.
From what I have heard banks are supposed to take them and after so many have been accumulated are returned to the mint for destruction.

I tried to get rid of about $100 worth last year at CIBC Commerce Court and was turned down. RBC at Royal Bank Plaza at Wellington and Bay took them.

Along with some of the other comments the banks should take them, but if the rejection is hurting to much you can try ebay as some have suggested or craigslist. Or just keep them and get into coin collecting, I'm sure if you keep reading this forum you will be hooked. Good luck.

My buddy works at a BMO, here in Winnipeg and he says they have people bringing them in all the time along other out of date bills and coins. He says the people working there usually buy the nice ones, of course he's never got me any.

So you might try there.

How do you guys roll them? Just in plain paper? I can't say I've seen paper sleeves for them?

Well if you are successful in finding a bank that will take your coins let us know. TD has been good to me in the past and I know that they take them, you can try the one at Eglinton and Yonge as I know they for sure take them. Tellers are not always the most informed people you may have to educate them a little and if all else falls just kindly ask for a manager.

I agree with SPP they make great tips, I do it, They usually meet with, are you sure, and you might launch a new collector.
Sadley for all of us the banks are really pushing to eliminate cash and currency. They really don't like moving and counting cash.
Rest in Peace

This isn't the first time this has happened. Legal tender for all debts public and private doesn't apply to transactions.

Do you have something like http://www.craigslist.org ? I'm sure someone would be tickled to give you foldin' money.
