Hi all,

I thought I would share my new project with everyone. A couple of years ago I bought a lot of 5-10 uncleaned ancients from a well-respected dealer. A few months later I bought several more, mainly because it was a 'clearance sale' and the price was right. I have finally taken them out of storage and am ready to get started.

I've read through the last several months of threads on this board and on forvm trying to come up with a plan. I know it will take a lot of time and patience. I think I'll practice on a few of the smaller ones that have a little detail so I don't get discouraged working on worthless slugs. Once I'm a little more confident I'll try the larger coins. I honestly don't think I'll end up cleaning every single one, but time will tell.

Several of them look to be attributable without any work at all. Several more will only take a little cleaning. But of course the great majority are hunks of indecipherability.

So far I've attributed a Carinus, Constantine I, and Maximianus. (This of course leads to spending lots of time on wikipedia.) There also appears to be a ~29mm byzantine coin, and I'm quite interested in the one on the left with a woman on it.

Here are some pix:

When I have coins for cleaning I get excited, and impatient; however, one must curb their impulses and let the processes work. I am envious of the coins you posted. I need to purchase a lot for cleaning. Its been a while. Congrats on the nice finds

I enjoy the process of cleaning ancient coins and discovering what's under all the dirt. You have found some nice coins so far.

I just don't have the time for uncleaned - though a few lots have passed through my hands. Twenty years ago the quality was amazing and it's a shame but nowadays they tend to be rather poor lots. You've been lucky as some of those are rather nice. As you say the female portraited one looks interesting - A Julia (Domna) or Faustina likely.

best of luck with them

If you can, please post a larger picture of the female portrait coin mentioned, that's a neat coin.

Bacchus2, what do you think caused this change?
