I went into a pawn shop this weekend and they had a roll of 2003 silver eagles for $1100. I had 3 rolls in my backpack at the time I was selling to s freidn later in the day. I asked how much they pay for rolls of eagles. He said, "We paid $600 for this roll." I said thats quite a profit margin. he smiled and said "Have to make money somehow"....couldn;t believe someone sold $850 in silver for $600 and they were asking $1100.

Has anyone been bored enough lately to stumbled across the TV show "Pawn Stars" ... sadly, I have actually watched a few episodes, but I almost feel like taking a shower afterwards!
Here is a typical reoccurring scenario => "Hey man, whatcha got there?" "Ummm, I found this old coin" "You "found" an old coin?" "Ummm yah, it was my Grandfather's, I think?" "Well, how much do you want for it?" "Ummmm, $100,000" "$100,000? ... I'll give ya $15 for it" "How 'bout that gun behind you?" "How 'bout I give you $10 for it?" "okay"

I used to watch it, then the items being brought in got boring and uninteresting, so I stopped.

I sell coins, military collectibles and an assortment of other things at three different flea markets. I don't care what your age is, your ethnicity or gender if you're interested in anything I have for sale I am more than willing to answer any questions you have about any of the things I sell. I have never had anything stolen, knock on wood, and by being friendly and helpful to everyone it gets noticed by those passing by. With reasonable prices at near grey sheet bid or just slightly over I manage to sell to both true collectors and the person who is buying on impulse. PM me if you want to know where I sell and come on out and say HI. Ed ANA LM-3175

Gyrene7483, if I'm ever allowed to cross the border into the States, then please meet me and I'll buy a few coins off of your wagon, okay?

I'm surprised to see all these threads about pawn shops; I've only seen one within 50 miles of my home, and walking by the place I can see the 'proprietor' is armed to the teeth behind a screen, so I've never felt the urge to go in!

I kinda agree with you, JackB ...
I figure that "pawn shop" is merely another way of saying "I just stole this item and I need some quick cash so I can buy some hash"

I hate places like that. I found what I thought was an antique store the other day. I walked in and saw a bunch of fake Chinese antiques and a guy appraising a gold ring. Yep, just another cash for gold scammer...

You just have to visit Chicago. Pawn shops are as common as grocery stores. And most are like the one you saw. Usually too you'll find them near a flea market and many of the owners sell at the flea markets too. Usually about once every 6 months you'll notice a regular missing from the market and when you ask about them, you get that look as if who is asking. Why do you want to know. What buisness is it of yours. Yet I can not find one that sells coins.

Gyrene 7483, you are the kinda guy I like to do business with! In fact most people I deal with in coin stores and Antiques malls are usually really nice people. And to be honest, sometimes I would rather give my money to the nice guy at slightly about grey sheet;that the curmudgeon selling slightly below grey sheet.

He seems to pay pretty well for coins, though. In one episode, a guy walked in with a gold escudo. He said he would give at least melt, but he had it appraised as real and gave him 30 grand. He once bought a Spanish shipwreck bar for $80K. I found a video interview with him on Youtube, and he showed the reporter his back room. He has entire safes full of slabbed coins and junk silver!

A local pawn shop/coin store has a junk silver dollar box. I picked a 1928 Peace dollar out of it that looks high AU or low MS to me. Best $28 I ever spent. I suspect it was confused with 1923 or the box was "salted"/"sweetened". There were about 30 Peace dollars most 1922 and 1923, a dozen or so common Morgans, a few rough ASE, and some rounds. I bought everything in the box for $28 each. There are a few other places in town. One I will never step foot in again. The other you have to bargain and bicker with the old guy to try to get anything from him. But, he usually has the harder to find items. If is was "salted" then he made a smart move because I have spent a lot of money in his store. The stuff he has is high quality and priced fairly. If I am looking for something, I go to his store first.

The few numismatic items for sale at their shop in Vegas were twice normal retail. One case of coins and paper notes..nothing special.
