I'm considering buying an ASE and then maybe start a collection of them. Which single ASE is a must have?

Well my fellow NJite, it is the 1995-w proof. You choose the grade and look it up on ebay, I think it will make you decide very quickly, as I did, that although I want to collect the ASEs, I will forget about that proof in my collection. Good Luck with your ASE collection, Berry

Each coin also bears the "W" mint mark reflecting its striking at the United States Mint at West Point.
Does this mean that all 2006 Silver Eagles minted at West Point, such as the coin below, are part of this "Anniversary" minting? It doesn't say anything about an "anniversary." All it says is >> Year: 2006; Grade: Cameo Proof - West Point Mint; Comment: Boxed with Certificate of Authenticity. And is $36.95 considered a good price for this coin? Do I ask too many questions?

RangerXLT8, When I try to "Checkout" at https://www.mintproducts.com, Internet Explorer, Version 7, gives me a page that states the following >> There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website has expired or is not yet valid. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server. We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website. Click here to close this webpage. Continue to this website (not recommended). After seeing that, I have to say that either there is something wrong with Internet Explorer, Version 7, or there is a major problem with mintproducts.com.

1st of all, no, you dont ask too many questions- that is the only way to learn. 2nd, the proof silver eagles are made every year(currently)at West Point. These are included in the 20th Anniv set but are not specific to that set and can be purchased separately. The 2006 issues are still available from the US Mint for $27.95 plus $4.95 s&h so $36.95 is more than you need to pay.

For MS Eagles, the key year is 1996 which is currently $60+. Also, the new 2006 "W" Eagle might become a key or semi-key due to much lower than normal mintages. Only time will tell on that one though. For proof Eagles, Berry was correct. The 1995 W with only 30,125 minted is the big boy and most will never obtain it. Other semi-key proofs are 1993, 1994, and 1995 and are valued around $200 each

@ JeffMO, that is not a good sign. LASt time I placed an order in FireFox 2.0 about a month ago I had no issues. Off topic but you may want to consider Mozilla FireFox, it's superior to IE in every way. I suggest checking out APMEX.com, they hlso have the Silver Eagles. The ASE is a beautiful coin and one of the most collected of US coins. I got my 1996 UNC for 45.00, long story behind that. ASE are a coin many people can collect because they are not expensive. I hope the "w" 2006 Eagle turns out to be a key date:)

Thanks for all the info all. The local dealer said I can have the 2006 ASE W for $35. I'll try to talk him into $30. I'm going to try to see him tomorrow. I'll also ask him about the other key dates.

Thingee, are you referring to the proof ASE or the new unc W eagle? If it is a proof, that is a good price but if it is the unc version that can be had for $24.90 inc. s&h directly from the US Mint.

I went to the dealer today and got 2 proof W ASE's today. I got both for $65. Man, are they gorgeous!! The mirrors on them are awesome! I also got one unc Phila. ASE. I also asked for the UNC W which won't be in until next week. $16 for each unc. Is that a good price? Another question: the plastic that the proof ASEs come, are they air-tites? Because I though in order for them to be air-tite they needed to have that soft rim inserted around the coin.

Thingee the most sought after unc. Eagle would be the 1996 and it is very pricey compared to the other issues. Some of the other 90's Eagles are commanding higher prices now, such as the 94 and 97 so I would make every effort to get a set going and up to date very quickly. Actually they are a really neat set in an album and when you pick the album up you will know why! Nothing like the weight of 21 ounces of silver in your hand! I might also add I, as well as many others, do NOT consider the 1995W a member of the silver eagle set. It was NOT released individually as it was available only in sets of gold eagles thus the very limited striking of just over 30,000 coins. While it would be great to have one it is no more a member of the Eagle set than the 1895 Proof Morgan dollar is to a set of Morgans. At times certain special coins are not even included in some albums. Good luck with your hunt!

$16 each is a good price, if he'll hold. The mint is selling @ $19.95 ea. + ship. The Airtites are no better than the mint. If you get a Direct Fit Airtite there is no foam. The foam is decoration and to keep the coin from flopping around in a larger holder. Having worked for a major historical society, the long-term effects of anything but TRUE (DuPont) Mylar has me a little worried.

Yes, biochemist, I was referring to the proof ASE 2006 W. The unc ASE 2006 W is the one I will get from the dealer next week for $16.
