I have found someone willing to sell a quatity of War Nickels for $1.40 each. He has about 50 of them. Is it a buy at that price? They are all circulated and not in collector'condition, I would be buying them just for the silver.

Sounds like a pretty good price to me, 50 of them would be a little under 3 ounces of silver.

i would hop on it. If he has 50 that will cost you $70. Melt is at $114.52 for that much. Usually these nickels don't sell for full melt because of low silver percentage in them, but I'm sure you could sell them here for $90 to $100. At least $100 on ebay but then you have fees.

Sorry, but War Nickels are not a great way to buy silver because the coin / silver dealers will only pay about a $1 each for War Nickels when they contain $2.25 of silver. there is the US law that says you can not melt the Penny or Nickel for it's metal. the dimes, quarters & halfs can be melted here in US, so coin / silver dealers pay closer to actual melt value. they might have to ship the War Nickels oversee to melt for silver. Best way to buy silver is the Canada Maple Leaf...it contains .9999 silver and face value is $5 compared to US eagle in only .9993 silver & $1 face.

unholyroller: well I love this site and visit it frequently :) hehe. Quote:PSS... he willing to sell a quatity of War Nickels for $1.40 each because the dealer will only give him $1 each! yeah that is the dealer. people who aren't dealers pay more. I have bought and resold War Nickels from craigslist. I know that if you bought this lot for $70 for the 50 War Nickels, if you wanted a super fast sale you could resell it for $85 and have it be gone fast. well maybe not on craigslist but here or on ebay. I'm sure people on this site would pay you $90 for them.

The thing I don't get is just because a law says you can't melt nickels and pennies, what keeps places from doing it? Once it is melted you can't tell what it was, or do they have to report and record everything they melt and turn it in to the government?

People probably do melt cents, and nickels, but if they are caught they would get in trouble. You can't burn currency, but I bet if I burned a $1 bill in my room right now no one would find out and I would not get in trouble. But that doesn't make it legal. What keeps people from melting these coins is the law against it and the consequences of doing so that people want to avoid.

I think $1.40 is a very good deal for War Nickels in bulk. I would do it. You can turn a profit right away, wait a while and see what the market does, or add them to your collection. I would just keep a roll and sell the extras.
