I think you did very good. A gold coin slabbed at just below spot price EDIT - polished or cleaned will hurt the value to a coin collector.

IMO polished is worse than cleaned, but you still didn't spend too much over spot.

Flook, You did fine and sometimes having cleaned or polished gold coins could actually work in your favor if you happen to be at an auction where few educated coin collectors were present. Many times 'newbies' to coin collecting will buy cleaned/slabbed coins thinking that they are worth more because just because they are shiny. Just inform the auctioneer before your coin goes up for auction that you desire a reserve price at melt and you should not have any problems. IMHO, mdpmedia

I don't think much could go wrong when you pay pretty much melt for the coin. From the pics, it does not seem like the coin has been polished too badly. It still even retains some mint luster near the protected areas. Usually when I see polished, the original surface is stripped and no mint luster remains.

thanks....i have always known that cleaning a coin hurts the value, but I had never heard of polished before so I just wanted to clear that up.....i figured it being that close to spot it couldn't be that bad of a deal, but I wanted some of your expert opinions....THANKS to everyone who commented and hopefully I will make more gold purchases here soon and post some pics

coinstar....i know its risky buying off craigslist and normally I would NEVER buy anything this pricey off craigslist, but since it was in an ANACS case I figured it couldn't be too bad of a risk

Well, those can be faked, too, but I seriously doubt someone would fake a slab with a "polished" problem code. I think you made a nice purchase.

I have a 1914 Indian Quarter Eagle that was graded by ANACS. The coin graded Unc Details Cleaned Net AU50. It is such a beautiful coin and would be worth a lot if it wasn't cleaned, but I bought it for $280. I think sometimes about putting it into a nice ring since I collect a lot of the Indian small gold, but it looks way too nice in that ANACS small holder. If you got it near melt enjoy that old gold shine!
