It looks slightly better in person. lol. This came in a bag of 17 large pennies with a few mixed coins. $20 for the bag at the flea market. I had to clean it because it was just a black blob with no details showing.

It looks like someone used it for a cuff link or something. It looks like it was mounted.

What happened to it? It's 214 years old, THAT'S what happened to it! 8) It would most likely fall into the "Poor" range, but that is still a wicked find! Might have been used as a button or a pin at one time. But as rough as it is it is STILL distinguishable as a 1797 Half Dime, and that's important. There are a few varieties, but a quick look shows an AG going about $500 or so. Given its current state it's really a "what it's worth to someone" type of deal. There were only 44,000 =/- minted so they're not gonna be turning up all over. Either way, you are one of the fortunate few that can say you have a Half Dime from 1797! Steve

Thanks for the info. I have a lot of old junk coins that I will need to get a rough estimate on. Unfortunately, my grandmother just passed so everything I own has to go on ebay to pay off the back taxes on her property. :-( Does anyone know where I can get rough estimates on old African ivory chess sets? Thanks again

Yes it was a button at one time, but it does have some value. It's definitely a problem coin but I would put it in my collection if I could afford it. Unfortunately I don't believe you have been on here long enough to do sales. I don't know if mentioning you ebay name would be within the rules or not.

Great find and a scarce coin. If I had to take a shot, I'd say Fine Details/Damaged,Corroded and maybe about a $200-$300 coin given it's current condition.

Nice find in a $20 coin bag! I hope that you can get a good price out of it to take care of the debts.

Getting it slabbed as a genuine coin will make it so much easier to sell and is well worth the fee for it. Early Half Dimes are so hard to come by in most any condition you will have no problem selling this coin. For $20.00 you scored big time, congrats! What else was in that bag? There might be other treasures in there. Ed ANA LM-3175

If they are so hard to come by that he will have no problem selling it, why would having it slabbed make it easier to sell? I know I am weird but as it is I would be interested in it, slabbed I have no interest in it. I don't buy slabbed coins.
