Hello people, I just bought a Queen Victoria full Sovereign, Shield reverse,1885. This coin weighs 7.98 and has the correct thickness of 1.52 However, there's a problem with it's diameter! it is 22.1 instead of 22.05 The dealer is a friend of mine, his theory is that maybe this coin has been stored under a heavy load which might have caused this expansion in size! another detail might support this theory,if you check out the pictures I uploaded closely, you could see like a circle, or a crack line, (don't know the word) along the words "DEI GRATIA" and also on the back this line is obvious around the crown. All significant opinions are truly welcomed and appreciated. Thank you!

The image of a known genuine piece could be laid over the top of this one, for a direct die comparison. This technique has already been done on another thread in the CCF, and in my opinion, is a powerful diagnostic tool.
How was the diameter measurement taken? Check the diameter at several angles with good quality vernier calipers.
Strange story that you have been told. If the story is true, there should be obvious damage to the coin including some flattening of the detail at some of the high points. I don't see that.
I agree that there seems to be evidence of a die crack from the pictures presented.
Have a close look at all of the edge milling with at least 10x mafnification.

You're right,no high points damage. I can still give the coin back, which is what I think I'm gonna do :(

Maybe it's just me, but an irregularity of five one-hundredths of a millimeter - or two one-thousandths of an inch - in diameter (a difference of four tenths of one percent) wouldn't be a dealbreaker. The coin likely measures differently at a different point on the circumference. For the record, the official acceptable tolerance for thickness of a Sovereign - an 0.4mm range - is eight times the difference you're quoting here. Then again, I have a real weakness for shield-reverse Sovereigns, so take me with a grain of salt.

I see an "S" mintmark. The rest of it looks pretty cool to me.

Quote: Maybe it's just me, but an irregularity of five one-hundredths of a millimeter... I noticed that too--it's just 50 microns difference, or roughly the thickness of a human hair. Depending on the caliper, it's margin of error might be greater. It's a nice looking coin!
