I always like to think back and remember how I started collecting.about 5 years ago when I was 9 I found a 1906 Indian Head penny in a puddle outside. Ever since then I have been an avid collector. Whats your story?

As a teenager working at a restaurant, crack open a penny row and a MS 1885 IH just pop out. I still have it because it graded as MS 64BN in a NGC holder.

I found a 1967 centennial cent in my basement... Did some research and got hooked on coins.

My dad gave me two Eisenhower dollars in 1978. Having never seen anything larger than a quarter, I was intrigued. Thus began my true interest in coins.

To old to remember. But I think it had something to do with my Dad giving me shinny, silver looking pennies.

When I was 12ish, my grandmother gave me many coins she had saved, to give me when she thought I was of a responsible age. Also, in the late 50's, early 60's, the Boston Jordan Marsh store had a very large coin section on the 1st floor, lots of display cases in an open floor setting - I would go in there and buy those beauties whenever I could scrape up a few dollars, but being bad with money, I didn't keep them long, and then when I was old enough to own a car, everything was gone. Started up again in the early 90's, a little bit of everything U.S.

My aunt Mae would give me dimes when I was a young lad. She saved and gave me only Mercury dimes. Very beautiful coin.

Found a 1909 LWC and a silver quarter in the same week about 4 years ago. Before that, I knew nothing about coins other then 1964 and earlier US coins were silver.

Interesting how many folks started based on a unique found coin.

My Dad collected and always searched his change. I recall his excitement finding some old dime worth about $87 at that time. He imparted a fair amt of knowledge to me over the years, but I never really started myself back then.

He passed on in 02 and them when Mom died in 09, I was executor and had the coins to deal with. Had the collection appraised and with four brothers, I did not fight over it. One bro got the stamps, one got the coins, one got the furniture, and I got a bit more cash than the others.
Then in the process of it all, I took an interest in coins in general, and having a desire for silver instead of cash, given the overall state of the economy, I started buying the coins I liked most, and now have a good collection of Morgans, along wit a stockpile of ASEs for bullion

I wonder if any coin collectors got their start while sitting in prison and talking to counterfeiters?

Hello everyone! I just finished writing this in my "welcome to the forum" post when I saw this topic:

I'm a coin enthusiast who has been collecting since I was a young child. I started back when I lost my first tooth (the "tooth fairy" gave me an Ike, kind of heavy for a little fairy if you ask me... ) and haven't looked back since.

I definitely like hearing that the Eisenhower dollar brought someone else to the hobby.

I recall when I was a child my father going me his leftover coins when he returned from business trips in various corners of the world. When I was 12 I found an Indian Head cent by the banks of a lake, and my relatives thought that I seemed really intrigued. My aunt suggested that I should see her father-in-law's collection when he came to visit. Yes, it was one of the largest collections of very high grade coins I have ever seen. He had been collecting for about 50 years, and that visit provided the impetus for another to begin a large collection.

Mine started when I was in my 20's and had always wanted a silver dollar, so I walked into a silver shop and bought 2 1991 ASE's. Then with college and family lost the hobby until my father in law passed and had a nice collection of coins including old foreign coins. Now my wife is begging me to stop lol

my addiction started in about 1966 or 1967.I used to spend a lot of time at my grandparents house. My grandmother had jars and jars of coins. My "JOB" was to separate them into jars of pennies nickels, dimes, etc. Then into jars of dates,1930 pennies,1940 dimes.....and so on and so on....It took years to go through them all.
I finally got through the whole process, and I was hooked. When my grandparents passed on,the coins were left to me,and I got them all, still in the jars and boxes I had separated them into so many years earlier.Brought back floods of great memories.
Thanks to all here for letting me remember those good times again.

Great story, RMAN4443, always good to look back at what your grandparents did for you.
