I have a chance to make a offer on a Safe.
I have not seen it yet, hoping to this weekend.

The lady that has it says it is very old.
It is 37 inches wide, 43 inches tall and
26 inches deep. She say it is very heavy but
on wheels that look rusty.

Has any one bought one like this, I am hoping
to figure out what a good offer would be.
I know with out pictures or seeing it, it can be hard to
come up with a price but sometime when making a purchase
like this you have to be ready to make the deal. So I thought I would ask if anyone here has bought one.

Depending on its actual condition and age, I would say $200-$300 maybe more. It's hard to guess a more accurate figure without some pics or more of a description

Just remember that there were no standardized fire ratings used until the 1950's. So any old safe (which have concrete in their walls)have no guarantee of how long they could protect items inside during a fire. They are just basically good for theft protection now.

tough question without more info...
That's like asking "how much is my coin worth" without knowing the type of coin or the grade.

If you go online you can find a brand new safe with a 2 hour fire rating and 6 dead bolts for under $500.00.(sometimes with free delivery and set up) Safe sales in North America are currently sky rocketing and at an all time high as a result of more investors having less trust in banks and stock markets.
Also take into account more hard asset investments such as gold/silver bullion resulting in the need for secure home storage. Good time to buy a safe, many competitive prices and high quality pieces around if you do your shopping correctly.

Think $150 max until you see it. Don't make an up front offer but ask the lady what she is wanting to get for it. She might say $100.

Don't go over 200. As stated above, fire ratings were not standardized.

A 24 gun Cannon gunsafe runs $499 on sale.

As noted already you should really see it first. Might be a pile of junk or a fantastic safe. Most people that do not know what they have may say anthing. Might be smart to ask how much she wants before you start offering. For prices you may want to just check out the web sites for them. Also, many places like Menards has a large variety of safes and even if you don't buy one there, lot of good information and a visual of what you may want.

The lady is working today .. just waiting for her to get home. And hope I can get a look at it today.

I have been looking online and have found two that look like she describes.

This one is the closet to what she says it looks like.
But hers is bigger.

Of course I know what someone is asking and what they will take can be different. Of course I will ask her what she wants for it, and work from there. I am thinking $300 might be the most I would want to go. less if it is not
so good .. little more if it is really nice.

I did go to tractor supply co. today. They had Cannon and Winchester gun safes, medium size fire proof for $599.

I like the idea of having a old safe .. but would have to be something that works well.

hopefully she has the combination. A lot of these old safes were the property of the husband and sometimes things like combinations got lost in translation.
don't forget to figure out how to get it to your house, truck, two/three guys, plywood to cover existing floors and remember, safes are great if you get burglarized when you're not home but the combination is readily available to anyone that makes you give it to them.

That being said, old safes look way cool too.

Make sure that you are comfortable opening the safe before you purchase it; my grandfather's old safe has a really finicky lock.

Now that too sounds promising. Hopefully you know the prices on some old guns. Some can be really expensive.
Rest in Peace

We left one that looked identical to the craigslist safe when we moved the shop. Couldn't even get someone to take it for scrap.

If it's locked out, and there may be contents of value, buy it to gamble. They tend to have minimal storage space, seldom are fire resistant, and won't stand up to modern tools and torches.

If you can move it yourself, fine, but otherwise, they ain't cheap.

I had a look at the safe this afternoon. It is a very old safe.
First look ...it seemed pretty big, but not a lot of interior space.
The walls of the safe are 4 or 5 inches thick.

She had 3 binders filled with 2x2 (one I looked at, had Morgans and half dollars)
Then some mint stuff still in shipping boxes, two small drawers with rolled coins.
and a smal stack of coin albums.

I like the look of the safe but it would not be able to hold all my coins.
I know she will not go lower than $350 ...maybe $300. I think she got online
and was seeing what some restored old safes were selling for.

Only had a small window of time today .. did not get to talk about the coins or the guns.
