Here is what I like to call the 1943 50 Cent `Dwyer Crown` variety..... ...ok maybe not. This a serious die break: I have about 10 43s and I have two with this break. Why doesn`t it get recognition and if it is new, why isn`t it named after me? Seriously, anyone seen this? Frank - Prescott

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure if Hans Zoell had known you he would have considered naming it after you. Instead he listed it as FL444n in 1965. Geo VI half dollar varieties are my favorites, and nice clashes and breaks top that list. Nice find, never saw one till now and you have 2.Guess my chances of finding one are good. In Hans' variety book it was reasonably priced at $2 in '65 in fine and $5 in unc, on a scale of 40 cents for some common breaks in fine (who sells a half for 40 cents ?) to $6-$7 for tougher breaks, this should not be too scarce.

I've got a nice collection of these...too bad the silver bubble has made these much more expensive lately

George VI Fifty Cent Varieties are also my collecting interest.... The Die Crack through the crown that you have, is fairly common and you can find it in various stages of progession as it develops.

Thank you, everyone.
I thought all the Zoell varieties all went through the "3" in varying stages. But this a Zoell as well? Specifically an FL444n ? Anyone got Zoells book in PDF? Looks like I need it and I can't remember having seen it for sale anywhere...
Still in print?

Hans Zoell published a series of Variety Books in the 1960's. They are broken down into Major (Non-Progressive) Variety Catalogs and Minor (Progressive) Variety Catalogs.. To get the complete Zoell coverage, you will need the 1967 Fourth Major Catalog and the Third, Fourth and Fifth Minor Catalogs which build on each other.... You will need to search for Hans Zoell in Used Book Stores and sometimes they will show up online in various auctions (eg.E-Bay)but they are getting a little pricey.

Zoell did not cover all the George VI Fifty Cent varieties... He identified less then a third of the Major Varieties (Repunches, Punch Style changes etc) and maybe half of the Minor Varieties.

I had no idea how interesting the 43 50 Cents were.
If Zoell doesn`t cover them all, is there a comprehensive publication that does? I`ve searched the net high and low and the most information I can find is right here.

It's great to see that someone appreciates the die cracks on the half dollar pieces, basically known as the 'Hoof through date' variety. They range from 1938 to 1946 inclusive. There is a lapse from then until 1949, when the die crack re-appeared. That die crack continued until 1953, including the 1950 design and 'no design' and the '53 NSF. Quite oddly the die crack was once again present on some '57 strikes. Many half dollars through those years, especially the 1950 offerings, were susceptible to multiple flaws along the coat of arms.
I'm only sharing my limited knowledge of the fifty cent pieces I've seen!
