Is there any way to tell if a coin flip is Mylar or PVC?

If you are buying new flips you don't have to worry. If you have really old flips you might want to change them out. I changed out all of mine from the 60's just to be sure.

Do you mean the cardboard flips or the two pocket flips? With the cardboard flips, I am confident that they are all made with mylar these days. The two pocket flips can still be found in vinyl(PVC) and mylar. The vinyl versions are soft and pliable and the mylar versions are stiff and rigid.

Mylar (AKA boPET) is pretty distinctive once you've seen it. Vinyl (PVC) is floppy and a little bit stretchy, like you could make a car seat out of it, and has a slippery feel. Mylar is crisp, high-friction (assuming it's not greasy), very clear, and you can probably cut yourself on it. It is very resistant to stretching and forms sharp creases when folded.
