I have been looking at a 1812 Capped Bust half dollar that they have graded VF-20 and are asking $125.00 for it. I like the color of it but it has some slight rim dings on the obverse and reverse. I cannot see the sides of the coin. How much does rim dings like these affect the price/value of the coin? Thanks,

Rim-Dings?

Very little, in my experience. Of course this one has a lettered edge, so pictures of the edge might be important to you. I'd say it's graded fairly from the pictures otherwise.

The grade seems reasonable. The price, not bad, not good; I don't believe the rim damage is a dealbreaker. Tentatively, I'm going to call it O-104, R.1 in Overton.

I very much like the look and would be tempted at the price. The only hesitation is the true nature of the ding from 9:00 up; if it's more prominent in-hand than in the pics, I'd have to think.

For about fifteen seconds. Who am I kidding?

I just e-mailed them and asked about the rim dings. I know that there picture taker is on vacation so hopefully they can describe the rim dings. I do not want it to damaged the edge lettering. Also asked them if they would conside $115.00 but my dealings with these folks they usually don't budge. I also really like the look SuperDave, and the color is what attracted me. I will let you know how this goes.

Just received an e-mail back from them saying the rim ding at 9:00 is quite discernible, doesn't affect the edge lettering though. They did come down to $115.00 but I think I am going to pass on it and look for one without the dings.

It's an appealing coin and the rim problem seems minor, especially when the seller confirms the edge lettering is not affected. The defect IMO would not keep this coin out of a no-problem slab. It might be tough to locate a better specimen at that price.

Maybe it's just me, but if I ask a seller if they will take XXX dollars for a coin and they agree I feel an obligation to make the deal. If I'm not prepared to commit I'll instead ask what is the lowest price they will take. Then I can accept or refuse the offer.

I think the more important aspect of this coin is the original crustiness of it. Minor rim bruises can be forgiven on an almost 200 year old VF coin but an unmerciful cleaning would have absolutely ruined the eye appeal that is dripping off that coin If I was in the market for an 1812, I would have a hard time passing that one up for $115

I went back and re-read my e-mails with the seller and realized I offered $115.00 and they said they would take $120.00 so that was my mistake, if they had accepted my first offer I would too would have felt obligated to buy it. After sleeping on it I can't seem to get it out of my mind so I e-mailed the seller and told him I would take it for $120.00. I really like the color of that coin.

Not bad. Haggling over the few dollar difference sometimes is just not worth it for something you really like anyway. Of course how much is the postage? Handling and/or insurance charges too? Not sure where you plan on putting that coin but if in an Album, then those dinks don't maatter anyway. Really nice looking coin.

I won't have let the dig stop me after confirming no damage to the lettering. Nice coin.
