I expect San Francisco strikes to be strong. However, this has to be balanced against the age of the Master Die at this late date, especially the obverse (this one is struck from a relatively-fresh reverse design introduced in 1900). 1902-S is not among San Francisco's best efforts.
As a result, this one is a very tough call. I'm not one for willing usage of "Almost Uncirculated" - I find it difficult to believe that a coin could easily circulate for just a few months and then be hoarded for the next hundred years; rather, I suspect that many "AU" coins are weaker-strike Mint State examples which were saved from the beginning and had an accident or two over the years.
But I'm calling this one AU58. More by gut feeling than physical evidence.

I subconsciously ignored them when preparing my post.

I only have a HD video camera for photos, close ups are not the best feature.

this ones a tuff call, sorry I'm an addict, think its VAM 4, as to the grade, I too would expect a better strike from San Fransisco, yet the eagles right leg is lacking detail as does the wreath just left of the mintmark, I think this is not due to wear but a poor strike, I would think more of the coins lower surfaces would show wear but they are fairly crisp...the chest feathers are weak, the knuckles look not bad,,,but its the dings chest suggest minor wear..( what coin doesn't have that!! ) in them that keep me going into MS quality ..First impression was AU55, with todays standards I think I will stick with it..A coin I would like to have in my collection...let us know what it grades or if its already been graded...old standards or new?...

the first pics were better, but that's just how photo's go untill you have it down to a science..I think my conservative grade of AU55 is good, a few less marks on that nicely rounded chest would have swayed me to AU58, still a coin I would be happy with...
