If could could kick my own behind, I would! I got into a bidding war last night over an 1825 half dollar in F-12, having lost two very handsome early-date capped bust half dollars in VF-20 for $82 and $96 and having passed a VF buy-it-now for $87, to pay $100 for the con. Now I am thinking that the seller, who has fewer than 500 feedbacks (99.5% positive), was shill bidding the price up. Is there any way to detect shill bidding? Thanks.

what is the link? you can go to goofbay and see what the next bidder has been bidding on and if the only thing they have ever bidded on was the sellers items chances are its a shill but if they haven't bidded on any other items that this particular seller has sold or they haven't been the next high bidder on other items then its probably not a shill

Ifdone correctly it can be difficult to spot a shill bidder,, the only way is if they get over zealous and win more than they lose,, thus putting their name into the sellers list of buyers on a regular basis and on multiple coins.

thats why I mentioned goofbay, you can punch in a persons nick and see everything they have bidded on and if they always bid on this certain sellers items chances are its a shill

Why did you get into a bidding war? You should never get into a bidding war. The only way to bid on ebay it to snipe.

Sometimes one can just become exasperated at losing out on a desirable coin that it then becomes a quest to get a coin even at a lower grade just to "show 'em." It is a very stupid thing to do. Of course, the term "winning" an item fuels the competitive bidding. Americans like to win. Second place is unacceptable at any cost. On the other hand, I take some comfort in having obtained good deals on other capped bust coins so that it all balances out in the long run.

The answer is no, there is not, period. All you can do is guess and 99% of the time you'd be wrong. We have been accused many times, just because we have so many repeat buyers. I can only be done with certainty (and then only sometimes) by ebay because thay have access to IP addresses.

First there is an Austrian seller with like 5500 feedbacks and I will bid on about 25% of his gold coins in the hope of catching a low price way below melt I never did but people may think I am his shill because ocasionally I will buy from him above melt on true collector items . Second I have bought from certain persons in the past and some will go into a bidding war with me afterwards . I will leave them the coin but the next time I find them bidding on the same coin as me; just to spite them ; I will bid the 9 number like 119 when I know 120 is hidden or 139 when I know 140 is hidden etc It is very clear to everybody I do not want the coin and they may all think I am a shill but the bidder is going to pay more for having crossed me Sofar I never ever got an unwanted coin

I have to admit, I have jacked up the price on items out of spite. I have a seller that I buy from regularly. He had the same item advertised on separate days. I wanted one of those coins and noted that another bidder had bid on every one of them. To get one I had to pay a little over what I would have normally. I went back to the other items and bid to just below what I thought the bidder had input. He paid a little extra for the other three items. The winner was the seller. The losers were me, my conscious and the other bidder.

Well, I think that bidder is a member of this forum. Quite a few of the sellers that they bid on are from here. There's no shilling going on here, just a loyal buyer looking for seller's that combine shipping... http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d...l=1&rows=200

Yes I am new to ebay, and found and reporded one seller and bidder. That seller is no longer a seller. Was bidding on his auction (one day auction starting at .99 for coins worth thousands) same bidder on all his high dollar coins. save this auction I lost in my ebay.About a month later this seller was selling this same coin,i stated bidding on it again, the winner of this coin was bidding again.Sure it was the same coin because it was slabbed with a serial # sent all this info to ebay the seller had been on ebay for years,no longer a seller now!!!! He was selling abc slabs. Be sure before reporting ,as Bobby said alot of bidders like to buy from seller they can trust again and again. Bird out

The only other coinforum I post on is German There is a poster there that sells 40-50 pounds of silver or a kilo of gold as if it where sugar He has to buy it somewhere ; so I am sure I crossed him in bottomfishing mode on the German ebay The only thing that is fishy is a guy buying a series of coins way over normal prise because the postal savings on an ounce of gold are like 1% of the total price

I reported a seller to ebay last week. I have been looking at buying either a 69 or 70 20th anniversary set and this one seller, who has a lot of sets, had the same three or four people doing the exact type of bid ups over and over again. I can see if it's a couple of times, but the coincidence is just too high. ebay is supposed to check these complaints out and I hope they do their job. These auctions were all no reserve, for big dollar items. So, all I would expect from this kind of seller would be to put a reserve on it and then I wouldn't care about it, but I just hate what looks like the same people purposely bidding up something. Even if it sells for higher amounts without shills, just let the market dictate it, don't artificially mess with it. That's why I would put a reserve on it if I'm selling something like that. And I was only going to say about a sentence to start with on this post. I guess I'm a little worked up about this subject, eh?
