If you mean altered as in fraudulently, i.e. added mintmark, garage error, etc., then the answer is a definite no. It would be the equivalent of slabbing a counterfeit coin.

Depends on the alteration. An added mint-mark shouldn't get slabbed, but something that had been tooled or polished might get slabbed and given the appropriate scarlet letter for whatever the infraction is.

I wonder if you could get a henning nickel slabbed?

And that would be a fraudulent alteration not eligible for slabbing...

Why would you even want to spend money getting a worthless, altered, and damaged coin slabbed

Just buy yourself some holders and save yourself $30 or so. The coin is a garage job that can be made by anyone with a bit of ingenuity. The coin is worth face value and will never increase in value(unless copper prices jump). Coins like this are used to educate other newbies about what to watch for. I would just put it in a 2x2 and be done with it. It isn't an error or a valuable item.

As said depends on the alteration. Chopmarked Trade dollars get slabbed, I believe there is a slabbed potty Trade dollar on Teletrade right now. If not it has been on recently. I've seen pictures of the sale. I don't remember if it was a PCGS or an ICG slab.

It's weird that they slab potty dollars, considering I'm pretty sure they don't slab hobo nickels.

Gentlemen if jjper77 wants to send his coins off to be graded by a TPG then I see no reason why he should not.
Its entirely his business if he wants to invest the $30/40 to get a coin certified. If it comes back un-slabed or in an "altered/damaged" slab then hopefully it will allow him to lay to rest the question of whether the coin is an error not.

The coin will not go into a holder at all...but that doesn't stop the OP from wasting his money to find that out for sure.

I posted the Potty Dollar and it was slabbed by ICG as well as another one listed. I checked TeleTrade because it was supposed to be auctioned tonight but at the moment, they are TeleTradeless - thanks to Irene.

Since this is a "family" forum I won't post an image but you can google potty dollar and find some nice images including one in an NCS slab. Basically they are a re-engraved seated liberty coin, often Trade dollars, that show Liberty seated on a chamber pot. Frequently Liberty has been also be re-engraved to show her in the nude.
