Found some interesting colored coins today hunting 2 boxes. Found a few partial silver nickels too finally! Anyways, take a look at these 3 nickels. 1 is the normal BU nickel, one looks like it might be a black beauty (1961-D), one looks like it is copper (1978). Put next to a penny, it looks like a penny, the discoloration on the back is some green. The whole edge of the coin is copper colored too. Besides the discoloration on the back, it all all the copper color. Same thickness as a normal nickel. All 3 coins side by side, front and back. Black beauty in the middle. Copper front and back, and next to another regular nickel So am I right? Did I find a black beauty and a copper nickel?!?!

The black beauty:I don't think they have any in 1961.The copper looking one:I think is environmental damage. Also may I recommend you crop your photos before posting. John1

The nickel you think of as copper looks like it has a layer of the copper coloring. I can see glimpses of the nickel coloring in between the copper toning, so it looks like you have a normal nickel with copper toning. As far as the "black beauty", that is something that I am not familiar with, so I am unable to render an opinion about that one.

I thot BB were only 58 and 59, but could be wrong. The copper one is caused by sintering, a form of exposure to cents. PMD.

I've gotten a fair number of those copper colored nickels. Some of them really look like shiny copper, but they're always corroded, and if I scratch under the surface, they're nickel colored.

John1, could you recommend a site for information on a "Black Beauty". Thanks, never heard of them.

A black beauty is a nickel, from very certain years, that was "cooked" too long, I think

Improperly annealed planchet. They're not just black, but have a surface similar to coal.
