Got my lotus dragon from the post office today and it is absolutely beautiful. My only issue with the design is that I wish it was twice as large. Mintage aside.

Looks very nice....I always order from the mint...to help add to my Masters Club standing....It's all free express post shipping anyways...I just have to wait a little longer to have it in hand...It's sad to see all the neg reviews left for such a beautiful coin...No one's knocking the design only the inflated mintage...Hope the Chinese buy lots of them...they will cherish them forever and not try to make a fast buck in the after market...

Now that all of the angry collectors have posted their negative comments on the Mint's site, some positive comments are starting to roll in regarding the lotus coin.
I think it is odd that the lunar series is getting ripped when the Crystal Snowflakes essentially had the same mintage increase. Last year the two Snowflakes' mintage was 7500 each, or 15,000 combined. This year there are 4 Snowflakes all 15,000 each. That is 60,000 Snowflakes this year compared to 15,000 last year. And there was no special reason to raise the mintage. At least the Dragon coin is the most popular of the lunar series.

You are so right Lithanial...I only ordered one snowflake...I always pick the one I think will do best in the long term...I didn't order the Xmas tree either...To me it needs two more crystals to balance it out...or no crystals at all..I'm already looking forward to other Sept. releases..

+1 on the design comment. They are beautiful coins no doubt, I ordered one of each too. But to me the fact that the design is amazing just makes the change in mintage and composition that much more a kick in the gut.

The difference between the $15 (Lotus and non-lotus) and crystals is the fact that, unlike the crystal coins some collectors have paid subscriptions. The fine silver series started with a reasonable mintage of 9999 and now we have 48888.
We'll see how this plays out. But I don't think the Chinese will have the impact some of us (and the Mint) are hoping for.

Always have a question for the lunar coins, Dragon is only one in twelve coins, and there is not much difference with other zodiacs (in Chinese lunar culture, the 12 animals are equal, say, if your zodiac is rat, you may value more a rat coin, if mine is tiger, I may keep a tiger coin, except collectors), why Dragon is thought the most popular coin, and so emphasized in each lunar serier, or Mint is crazy ?

Good on the RCM for not screening negative comments. The dragon is the only mythical creature in the lunar zodiac and is the symbol associated with emperors, and gods that control the movement of the seas and weather. Once upon a time the use of dragon related symbols was reserved for the emperor of China only, on the pain of death for misuse. In modern times the Chinese people still associate with dragon by identifying as "decedents of the dragon" (loosely translated). For these reasons the dragon had always held a more attractive seat on the zodiac, even though the dragon is 5th in the series.

I have never witnessed so much love and hate towards a series.

Another reason Mint makes a gambling on Dragon coins minage might be that Mint promote the coins in China. It is said that 30% of coins will be sold in China district. The Beijing Coin show will be conducted in early November, I am sure are C Mint is sparing no efforts to sell these dragons.

If 30% are sold in China, that still leaves over 34,000 for us - which is still a lot.
Besides, they only need to buy 1 and make their own replicas.
