I already have the Lotus comming but think I will get the Non-Lotus as well, it has more silver in it as well as a good looking coin.

Saw the lotus dragon in person today, stunning coin. But again, very disappointed by the change in metal composition and mintage 3 coins into the series. I wrote a review on RCM' website but it'll likely never see the light of day, so I thought i'd post it here. Reviewer: Disappointed Joe Pros: Stunning Design Cons: Inconsistent with series Best Use: Gift to the uninitiated Review: No response to the change in metal composition from sterling to fine silver mid-series will make sense, especially when there already exists a fine silver series. The dramatic increase in mintage also flies in the face of those that subscribed to the series since the 2010 tiger. A terrible shame that the beautiful coin is now marred with inconsistencies that will make it unappealing collectors. This coin is a sign that the RCM now weighs profit making heavier than the attention to detail and quality that made its products great once a upon a time. Bottom Line: Will not recommend to a friend

I doubt RCM will be able to sell that many dragon coins. the lotus tiger and rabbit are still available at RCM with mintage 19,888. besides, will that make tiger and rabbit more valuable? it's like 5 dragons chasing one tiger in non-lotus c ASE

Quote:doubt RCM will be able to sell that many dragon coins the mint said that most of the 48000 coins are allocated for sale in china.China has a population of 1,328,020,000...The dragon is very popular there...So even though we feel ripped off by the increase in mintage...The Chinese will go gaga over these coins..both very well designed I might add...The 2000 Dragon had a mintage of 89,183 and hasn't done to bad in the after market....So hopefully all is not lost yet...

I don't know if the Chinese demand can overcome such an increase in Mintage. See what happened on the previous series with the Dragon. If we apply the same ratio, we could see a few more coins sold, but not that many more. If anything, this will harm the project so badly that further demand may drop as sharply as it did in the previous series.

I am not sure how I read the graph but the last three coins in the cameo series were higher than 10,000:
2009 Ox 48,888 2008 rat 48,888 2007 pig 68,888
If you add the two current series together: 2012 100,000 2011 Rabbit 30,000 2010 Tiger 30,000

In regards to the last series, it is not so much that demand increased by 13% for the Dragon, it is more that the Mint increased their production by 13% to meet hypothetical demands. Obviously they were a little short on their forecasting since the original series sold out. I just don't get why they would resort back to the original series figures when the popularity of the lunar sets has been in decline since then.

The numbers are coins actually sold. Most went back to the melting pot due to lack of interest. Data from Charlton Volume 2, 2nd edition 2011.
It was an increased demand of 13.9%, nothing more.

I didn't realize they threw unsold coins back into the melting pot. Interesting, learn something everyday.
