I recently found this dime in some pocket change and when I looked at the back I could see the outline of the head from the obverse side..

thats one I would put in what I call my Oddball album. Offsets, clips, etc. I just find that the mints make so many errors interesting.

This one in the photo is a 1995 P ! I also have a 2002 P with a similar clash looks almost identicle, though it is half the clash as this one..

Thanks mishap-coins,

I've just recently discovered one of my Morgans to be clashed. This of course has sparked a new dimension to my disease!

Yeah something else to collect!!

Thanks again,

Michael

That's a die clash, and they are a normal and tolerable part of the minting process - not really an error.

Come on CC, let's not get bogged down in semantics! If the coin leaves the mint in a state not intended by the mint, can we not call it an error?
Granted clashes are not widely sought after, but they are cool. Kind of like these lathe marks.
Die-Clashed-Dime

Cool, semi rare, but no surge of error people to collect them.

Simply stating a fact - clashed die strikes do not generate any market interest unless they are severe and obvious, and they are considered a normal part of striking coins. That's why the Mint didn't bother to pick out all the surviving specimens and destroy them. They simply polish the die to remove the marks and continue striking coins. There are examples of other varieties and errors that the Mint did actually take the time and energy to try destroying all the pieces before they had a chance to circulate.

The cent is very interesting and indeed scarce. I actually have an example from the same die around here somewhere. That single 1996D die is the only one I have seen with reduction lathe marks that are so obvious. Although not generally highly marketable as an error, it is a very interesting conversation piece and far less common than die clashes regardless of strength.

In all of my posts I try to answer the questions posed. I only post if I believe I know the correct answer, and give that answer in its shortest form. Elaborate answers that attempt to soften the blow tend not to be as educational as a simple "this is what you have" answer. If you see a thread in which I did not post, it's because I didn't have an answer. No reason to take up space with an "I don't know" as far as I see it.

This is the second thread I have seen today where my response was seen as being rude or otherwise picking on the original poster. I apologize if my method seems harsh - it is intended to be educational and helpful. If I am not seen as being helpful I can find other things to do with my time.

Coppercoins, I for one appreciate the immense knowledge base that you bring to this board. When you deal with minute variety differences like you do, you have to be a stickler for details.

You certainly have helped refine my differentiation between common varieties, rare varieties, and true errors

Well Coppercoins :

I am surprised you wrote that !

I will say however that It seems you may be a bit skiddish and quick to react to critisim by others I don't know though I have re read this thread and I wish for you to point out where someone is attacking you.

I have never felt attacked by anyone here on the forum and take alot that is written with a grain of salt.

Hey CC,

I was hoping you would not take my post as a dig against you. My tongue was firmly in my cheek at the time. I was hoping the smiley would show that. Sometimes my humor gets me into trouble.

Please understand I hold you in high regard. I have utilized your website for quite some time and am amazed at your knowledge. The last thing I want to do is make you think otherwise.

Thanks for your comments about my lathed cent. I actually have 11 left of my original 15. I found them in 1996 and could never find anyone who knew what they were. Last year Mike Diamond informed me of their scarcity, but subsequent non interest by collectors.

Again please accept my apology. But remember when I use this.. I'm trying to be funny.

I never saw anyone as 'attacking' me. I only saw that my sometimes very dry but as factual as I can be method of answering questions was not as appreciated by some here as by others - and yes, I was just coming out of responding to my being 'rude' when I opened this thread and saw 'semantics'. I probably didn't give myself time to change response modes before posting to this thread and for that I would be at fault here.

The one thing all here must be aware of when reading my posts is that I have been doing this for nearly 30 years, and have been involved in online forums answering the same questions since 1997. I also am a numismatist and artist as a living, I do not have a paycheck job...so I am literally nose to book either writing or reading almost 12 hours a day and usually spend most of the other 4 at the gym or drawing. I come by here as a service to collectors as much as I come here to read and see what's going on...but I generally have very little time to get into details in a post. A minute to two minutes spent going through a thread to see if the correct answer has been given to a question is usually about all the time I have - my answers are as factual as I can be, and as quick as I can make them. This gives time to cover the other five forums I check at least weekly for new questions or information. I don't mean to sound crass, rude, or demeaning. I'm just really busy but still want to participate and help out where I can...quick anc concise answers tend to be the best way to handle it. That plus I've been told my humor is so dry I make the Sahara look like an ocean...it's often hard to translate or interpret in writing alone, so I don't even try. I just stick to the coins, the questions, and the answers to those questions. Find me at a show and go to dinner with me - then you'll see my humorous side.
