I don't want to sound all mushy here, Bryan, but I begin to think that we might have created some kind of magic with this group and this place. I'm a member of a lot of different forums, and this has to be the most committed group of the lot. I, for one, take great pride in being a part of it.

I agree 100%, this is the most family oriented forum that I have ever known or heard of. The person that sent me these items I don't remember even having a conversation with him and he still felt like doing something so special that I was really having a hard time coming up with the words to explain how it made me feel. I just hope that I am able to give something back one day to make someone feel a small percent of feelings I have felt from the kindness of the members of this forum

OK Bryan
Now the truth
Our forum Mum & I stirred up a few folks guess you didn't know what a hornets nest we had here. We all hope you are doing better physically, financially, and that you are beginning to enjoy life once again.
just be careful - you questioned why you could not be in one of my draws - and look what happened.
Next time we may punish you with even more coins.
Have a wonderful holiday, enjoy your coins and your family,

I didn't mention the persons name that sent me the package because I wasn't sure if they wanted it to be known who it was who sent me the package, but I talked with them and they said it was ok. I want to thank muckeye (a relatively new member from Australia) for the beautiful coins and even more beautiful gesture for the holidays

I wouldn't consider myself a note expert, and my copy of Pick is pretty old (1986) but here's what I found: The first note is a regular Japanese 10 yen note, issued 1930-1943, fairly common except when genuinely Unc. Soldiers would likely have been paid in it. It's a "convertible note", with a promise to pay the bearer in coin; later notes lack this. It's Pick #40 in mine, but Pick numbers are notoriously inconsistent. The second note is an excellent example of Japanese Invasion Money (JIM), "Oceania" series. Japan issued these notes in all sorts of denominations, depending on the currency used in the particular regions before they arrived. (Occupied China is not normally considered JIM). Notes of the different series are also distinguished by the initial block letter. Burma (B) had cents and rupees, Malaya (M) had cents and dollars, Philippines (P) had centavos and pesos, Indonesia (S for "Shonan") had cents, gulden and (later) roepiah, and Oceania (O) had shillings and pounds. "Oceania" here means any lands formerly owned by Britain. As far as actual Japanese conquests go, that means only northern New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and surrounding islands. As these territories were the smallest, least populated and briefest-occupied, the Oceania notes are generally the scarcest of the five. The 1 shilling note (Pick #2) is fairly common in low grades; the 10 shilling note is one of the scarcest JIM types. If the Battle of the Coral Sea had gone the other way, notes like these would likely have been used here in occupied Australia, and sellers of these notes down here often hype this fact. JIM, wherever it was issued, was intended for use by the conquered civilian population, rather than for paying the occupying troops. Once the conquest was complete, the old currency was withdrawn and declared illegal to use on pain of death.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
