After a lot of trouble getting my email account to allow messages through from Heritage and not trash them as spam on the front end, I finally got registered on their site. I will probably bid on a few things that I need, but the huge advantage for me will be a steeper learning curve. I have been buying and selling coins since 1979 and collecting them before that, but when I have long periods of inactivity, I lose track of current market grading standards and relation to price (it seems to me that grading standards do shift with market demand even among the pro services). I recently bought a circulated 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece, uncertified, after a long search. I thought it was a problem free coin, perhaps, but not sure, maybe lightly cleaned long ago and retoned naturally. Anyway I liked it! After searching and enlarging thousands of Twenty Cent Pieces on Heritage, all of them slabbed at the grade I placed my coin at. I learned that over 90% have been cleaned and many are damaged and sold for the same or more as my coin. Now I like it more after seeing in detail what is out there on the market! By enlarging the pictures I can see in detail what the professional graders have used as criteria. What a great market and grading tool for the collector!

It's an amazing resource. I do not shop for coins online without a Heritage window open.

Another way of looking at coins online is to save a copy of the coin and open it in photoshop (if you have it) and change the colors to blue tones. this makes all kinds of imperfections show up that you might not be able to see on the regular pictures. Ageka, a forum member here, was the one who told me about it and it works really well. At least so long as you have the program, but I guess you could use other, similar programs too. I like Heritage for the vast amount of coins to be able to use for comparison purposes. It helps me a lot, as a newer collector who doesn't know how to grade accurately yet.
