My grandmother immigrated to the U.S from Ireland in the early 1920's, during the Great Depression she moved back to Ireland and brought this coin with her. She gave to my mother who subsequently gave it to me 3 years ago. I am just wondering is the coin of good grade and would its value be at this time?

Not completely sure if there is any friction on the knees but from the pics the coin looks to be MS. At a min AU-58+ but I am leaning towards MS-64.

It looks like the nose is very worn and other points show some wear.

Must say AU58+.

Great coin.

Thanks for the input, Should I get this graded? Do you have any ideas what it might be worth ? From what I have seen on line it could be worth $2000, but I'm not sure as this is the first time I have done any research on coins and I find it a little confusing to say the least. Thank you for your input.
Rest in Peace

Looks MS. I'm guessing the nose issue is strike related due to the luster. I'd have it graded just for authenticity purposes, maybe ANACS.

Looks like it has full mint luster - face does have some issues possibly strike.

I'll say MS-62 to MS-63

Well, consider that, if real, the value of the gold alone in this coin is about $1760. Of course it's worth $2000. But probably not a whole lot more, since it's one of the more common Double Eagles and would need to be in a very high grade to gain much additional value.

If your plan is to liquidate it, by all means have it graded if only for authentication purposes.

Agreed, slight touch of wear and luster disruption indicates AU status. As a slightly circulated common-date St. Gaudens double eagle it carries a small numismatic premium over the bullion value. I'd guess it would sell for about $75 to $100 over the spot price. No need to pay for grading IMO; just check the weight to verify the coin weighs about 33.4 grams.

Your coin is a 1908 Philadelphia-mint, "no motto" example, and a nice one at that!
