i heard someplace that this nickel or at least one of its reverse versions, was going to be a rare nickel because of its short lenght of minting.

is there anything to this and if so which one. and is there any official population on these coins?

I think last year they had the profile. Cant remember but I think they were on the two other ones. They made a billion or so or more.

The 2004 or 2005 Jefferson nickels are far from rare. It may not be common to find them in circulation since there are many collectors that pluck them out of their change. These are not key coins in the Jefferson series, just like sandpaper said they made about a billion or so.

This new Jefferson nickel is just another ho-hum coin as far as I'm concerned. They could do away with it for all I care.

Perhaps it was the "Speared" Bison error they were discussing? All 4 nickels made in 2004 and 2005 were made in the millions and if any of them do increase I would think it would be (1) PROOFS (they already have), and (2) the Satin nickels out of the Mint sets. Extremely high grade nickels will bring idiotic premiums and you have to play the gambling game with the grading companies and your hard earned money to get them slabbed and graded and the average Joe will NOT get high grades back! Not to mention the cost of slabs is nothing more than inflated hype that a wise collector would avoid!

Dan,
I don't think the Jefferson nickel is ho-hum at all, but the 2004 and 2005 JEFFERSONS will never be rare there are just to many people hoarding them and I don't why just like they did with the 1950-d. How the 1942-d thats a different story.

Bruce, I will agree millions of nickels have been hoarded as I am just as guilty as the next guy but still believe, in the long term, rolled uncs. may find a little value. Lots of folks are already selling them off, busting rolls to cherry pick, or quite honestly just spending them. The key will be the patience to sit on them for years to come as most folks give up way to quickly. Will we ever get rich, not a chance on these nickels but the mere fact they were only around for 6 months each made it a safe gamble for me and the fact that there was a buffalo on one grabbed my attention very quickly! Time will tell!

Rare? Crystalk practically has a corner on copper and nickel now from buying the buffalos. But I wish they would have kept the design. It's one of the few new coins from the mint that I liked.

A rarity would be the off-set nickel that a carver made into Robert E. Lee. Don't think any of them have done it yet.

Longnine,
If it can be done Bill Zach will try it by far the best nickel carver out there.
