Could someone help evaluate this coin for me. I believe it to be a mint strike error but and not positive. Pictures of it can be found here.

Interesting, a double headed beaver, you dont see one of those everyday.
I think I will reserve any further comments on this coin until I can see a better pic of the obverse what you show in your pics are covered by a ruler.
Are you able to show us better pics.

I absolutely love it!
I do however think it is a man made error. In order for this to happen coin A would have to be struck as in the ordinary manner creating a normal coin... then coin A failed to eject from the chamber while Coin B magically was struck without damaging coin A which failed earlier to eject while the coin B became stuck to the anvil or upper die. Then Coin B struck coin A causing the Brockage effect.
I think I confused myself on this lol! I think you get the picture.

unfortunately what you have is a man-made error. someone took a 1976 nickel and a 1978 nickel and pressed them together hard enough to leave an impression. If you look hard you can see the 8 on the left side. This is only worth 5 cents or whatever you value it as personally. won't fetch any premium

Don't despair maybe you can find it's mirror image counterpart out there somewhere.

Thanks for all the information everyone. Your opinion is much valued. Well I guess I'll have to relabel this coin a fake now, it's been in my collection for close to 20years now and I never noticed the date until it was pointed out in my picture. I've got a digital scale and a set of calipers so I'll get some more precise measurements and post later in the week. When I first seen this site I knew it was the place to register and post if I wanted the real information; looking forward to posting more coins soon.

FYI: This is a response I received via email regarding my coin.

I looked at all the photos, not an error coin, in my opinion. You need to do more research... Hans Zoell used to illustrate this effect in his guides and suggested it was achieved with hard rubber rollers...
But mainly, it does not fit the characteristics of a known mint error. It may appear doubled, but does not have the proper corresponding criteria of a genuine mint error.

In other words - to my trained & experience eye, it is no good. I hope my assertion make you have a tough look at this...
