I thought that everyone might enjoy this piece of news I saw on MSNBC.
BARRE, Vt. — With the drop of a single coin into a Salvation Army holiday collection kettle, the group may have been enriched by as much as $14,000.
The donated 1908 Indian head coin has a face value of $2.50, said Capt. Louis Patrick. It's worth at least at $250 and possibly as much as $14,000, according to a preliminary analysis.
"I was shocked," Patrick said. "I've heard of this happening in other places, but I've never actually seen it."
The coin was enclosed in a protective plastic case.
"It was an incredibly generous thing to do," Patrick said. "We are very appreciative."
The Salvation Army plans to have the coin appraised and sold, possibly before the end of the holiday season.
Thar's gold in them kettles! But could it actually be worth $14,000?

After I heard the story today. I looked in a price guide and yes depending on the grade of this coin it could be worth 14,000

Well it was very thoughtfull of the donator to put it in plastic before plunking it in an iron kettle . Those guys deserve the money for all the work they put in for free

It would be cool if the coin hit the top value although that is unlikely,,
It was a generous and benevolent action .

First they had better get it authenticated and graded. Then is it happens to be one of the key dates, he may very well have a $14,000 coin. The odds of this happening is great, and I rather immagine that IF it is real, it will turn out to be worth a lot less than what was stated.

Given to a well deserved organization. I wonder if they will keep they're eyes open for other findings.

You know, Thingee -- I've heard of this happening before, in other years, to the Salvation Army. Don't remember the locations, but they were always pretty spread out around the country, I think. This is a copycat, or else the same guy really gets around. When I was collecting money from the donation banks for a local charity, I always had my hopes up that someone would drop in a 1792 Half Disme or something, but no such luck. Jan
