I offer 85-90% of melt for the 90% silver. I run into alot of people who have no idea. I stick to this rate no matter who or what. I can't be accussed of cheating people and I leave enough so that I can sell it later and sticll male a little. I just check to make sure it is silver when I buy it and check for better dates later on.

At the coin shop where I am working, we offer 27x face with silver where it is. The owner believes very strongly in giving a fair offer to sellers whether it's collectible coins, scrap jewelry or bullion in general. He bases his buy prices on what APMEX will buy from him. In this business he can't afford to sit on stacks of silver coins, so often times stuff gets shipped out to them pretty quickly. His business has a A+ Better Business Bureau rating for what it's worth.

I go to flea markets to sell and I try to get around some before I set up to see what I can find to resell or for myself. When I see something on a persons table and ask for a price if it's reasonable I ALWAYS ask for something off and if the seller says it's a firm price I pay it, sometimes he seller will drop the price a little and then I pay that price. The same is true at garage sales. I always let them set the price, they get what they wanted for the item and I get a "deal." Now, if they don't know what the value of the item is and they ask me what I know about it then I am obligated to tell them what they have and offer a price for it, I won't lie to them. Either way the seller and I are both happy with the transaction and I can make the purchase with a clear conscience. If the item is more than $100.00 lower than it should be I will buy it and then say it wasn't enough and give them more for it, but anything under priced by less than $100.00 I don't. Ed ANA LM-3175

That was really good of you to be willing to help her out. I realize that many people aren't up to researching things, but how else will they tell if the offer on their coins is fair? It sounds like a very raw deal, but in a way she let it happen.

With the ability to research at ease with the internet, I have little sympathy for her. If she knew enough to be able to post the add on Craigs list, she could easily search silver coin values or the like and there ya go.
I would never lie to a seller like her, but if she were to offer me that for 500 I would say are you sure? If she says yes then I am in. If she hesitates or says she doesn't know the value, I wouldnt be that much of a butt. But I am never going to offer full value as I cant make anyhting off the puchase later on.

You know, regardless if the person did the research or not. I feel theirs a Moral responseabilty! We don't know whats going on in their lives. If shes an old lady who knows, if she knows how to work the internet. Even if she does know how, Does she have the time? Where does she begin. Think about everything youve learned. How long did it take you to read a price sheet. (Correctly)lol... Murrellington I also aplaud you! Things like this speak volumes of a persons character to me. I've had the oppertunity to make a killing a number of times. The fact they didn't do their research only draws me closer to help, It in no way gives me a Green Flag. To take em for what they have. Now their are some situations where these feelings get shoved aside. I've ran into a few very unpleasant, nasty, people who, I have no problems setting my fangs on. Well Sorta, If only they didn't do their job, researching the coins their selling was enough for me to keep quite and just make the purchase. I'd have one heck of a stash. To me it feels like were in our own little world where collectors stand by a code of ethics and higher morals. For some reason "Watch my Back & I'll Watch Yours" comes into my mind. Or do onto others as you..... would be better. I'm not sure why I'm like this? Maybe its because I watched my mother fight for every penny to raise my sister and I. So when someone took advantage of her the hurt was almost unbareable. IDK. I'm glad to be able to talk with you Murrellington. Thanks for a great topic.

Great points you have there amassey. She was trying to sell coins for an old friend of hers who probably had no idea how to use the internet, sounded like he was old. This woman obviously knew how to use craigslist. But she may not have know which coins, or if any were silver or not. To a non collector, old coins are old coins. She probably had no idea where to start looking up, or what to start looking up, or maybe even how to look the stuff up. She was taking the highest bid on craigslist thinking that that would work. but obviously some people are willing to take advantage of that. I realized she was selling this stuff for a good cause and I felt I should help. I too know the value of the dollar. I grew up in a family of 6 and only my mom was working. And she was a teacher and we all know that they are underpaid. "So when someone took advantage of her the hurt was almost unbareable." I know exactly what you mean. I guess people who grow up different have different feelings about this, and that is why our world is so diverse. Moreover, it actually felt good to help her out. She was so happy when I helped her and that made me feel good. It is worth it to help others, for the great feeling you get. At the restaurant where I work, a woman tipped me $5 in curbside takeout. As I walked away I realized it was a $20 and not $5. I had scored! But what I did was turn around and gave it back to her telling her she gave me too much. She ended up giving me $10 instead of the $5 that she meant. And later she called my manager and applauded me. She ordered the next week and thanked me again for my honesty. To me, those feelings are worth way more than money. Helping others to me is more fun than making extra cash, even though I love money.
