So I saw this ad in san diego for some old silver coins that a woman had posted. She had 66 Washington quarters, 26 Walking Liberty halves, a Morgan dollar, and a silver ike. She said she had no idea how much her coins were worth. I asked how much she would sell 31 quarters for and she said someone offered $100, and if I could beat that. I was at work so I couldn't reply till later. When I replied, I told her that I can't take advantage of her, even though I'm 22 and broke and can really use the extra money. I told her she has about $950 worth of silver. It was too late, she replied saying someone bought it all for $500. I bet they were happy. Anyways, she felt pretty sick that she lost out on over $400. Luckily she told me she has more and is going to ask me before she sells anything else. I told her I would help, because it's just so disgusting to take advantage of people like that. I was going to try to get a good deal from her until I realized she really was oblivious, so I thought I should let her know before she gets totally ripped off. Sorry for the long rant, but I wish people were more honest. I'm just glad she didn't get rid of all of her coins. It's nice to get a good deal, but it's not very nice when you are getting such a good deal that you are practically robbing them blind. Edited by murrellington 09/03/2011 02:34 am

Thanks Scott! I will stick to getting my silver for face value anyways. My method of getting them from roll searching just takes a lot longer! lol.

I applaud your honesty as well. One thing though, she had every opportunity to inform herself before the sale. I worked in an industry were I was buying used product every day and I had no problems buying things at a good deal. Education is key and if someone doesn't want to invest the time into it for themselves they can't be mad if they don't get top price.

I guess I can kind of agree with that, if you are going to sell anything, so your research. Maybe she just thought that all of mankind was honest, and that her offers would be close to what they were worth. lol. Never have too much faith in humanity, trust in yourself and google. hahaha.

I've seen the people who think their AG 1888 Indian Head is priceless.
And I've seen people like the woman described above.
I think the moral of this story is that you are an honest person, which is refreshing.

That's too bad she sold for so far under market but it should help you with future deals.
Just out of curiousity, what would you have offered her for the full lot?

As representatives of the numismatic community, we all have a duty to be honest about value when it comes to ignorant sellers. That doesn't mean we shouldn't look for deals......

Maybe it comes from living in Berkeley for a time, but I believe a bit in karma. Yours is good.

Honesty is the best policy.
A self made millionaire told me that.

Quote: Just out of curiousity, what would you have offered her for the full lot? Well I can't afford the whole lot even if I bought it all for $500. lol. But I was interested in 31 quarters which is melt of $242. I would have started my offer at $200 and so that leaves room for her to haggle up but then I can still get for a little under melt. But when she was about to take $100 for those 31 quarters, I realized she needed help. But where do you draw the line. I mean I just recently got a silver eagle for $25, and a 2000 5 quarter silver proof set for $20. Should we just take any deal we can get, or at what point do you draw the line and say you can't take advantage of someone like that. Cause we all like good deals and like to make money. So we can't go around offering full value on everything everywhere we go. Where do you guys draw the line? Do you just try to get any deal you can get?

First time I've heard of someone under-pricing coins on craigs. It's too bad you couldn't explain to her what she had sooner. In this world there's always someone looking to take advantage of the ignorant. Nice job telling her.....kudos to you!

She emailed me today with another list of coins. I valued them at $500 for her, lets see what she gets for them. Worst part is they are not her coins, she is trying to sell them for a friend.

It's a conundrum. Shame on the buyer for taking advantage of the seller? or Shame on the seller for not researching the value of what they are selling? I personally believe in Karma. I would never feel comfortable taking advantage of someone. But just because I wouldn't, I am not naive in thinking that no one else will take advantage on me due to karma. I research as much as possible, whether buying or selling. IMO - Very honorable murrellington. If we all thought and acting like you, we'd all have nothing to worry about.

How about be fair to her and yourself. If you both walk away happy then its a win/win.
