Hi, Being that this coin minted before Hawaii's union with the US I am unsure on to how to classify this coin: US or foreign..? Anyhow please assign a grade to this coin as well as an authentication also considering the holder's features. Also note that 'K' of KING is actually very clear and that an external spot on the slab is blurring this letter. The scratches that appear at PM o'clock on the obverse are also located on the plastic slab. The fifth picture down is a top-view shot(above the word, HAWAII) of the upper most slab seam. The '?'-shaped mark on the obverse under the 'U' of KALAKAUA is actually on the coin itself. Thanks, mdpmedia

Quote: The '?'-shaped mark on the obverse under the 'U' of KALAKAUA is actually on the coin itself. Are you concerned about authenticity of the coin? Is that '?'-shaped mark raised, incuse, or just discoloration?

I want to verify that both the coin and holder are real and/or non-tampered with being that apparently people have fabricated numerous fake 1883 25 cent coins.
The '?' mark is a very slight indentation on the coin's surface. It is as if a piece of rigid wire may have lightly brushed up on the coin to cause this mark.

The "?" mark could be a foreign object struck into the field. I'm not good with slabs, but I'm OK with fine details on coins. Speaking of which, how about this mark after "PONO"? Is it round, or some other shape?

It looks like the real coin to me. You might be able to go to NGC website, type in the slab number and pull up a picture of the coin they took when they slabbed the coin. I am not sure if they do it for every coin, but the ones I have ... have picture on their website.
As for the mark after PONO mine has the same mark, I think it is a period.

I'll let you make your own conclusions using the two attached photos regarding the shape/consistency of this dot after PONO. Both of these pictures are taken of the same dot but using different lighting positions. Incidentally, the halo effect around the dot and the 'O' of 'PONO' seem to disappear when the light source comes from a different direction...

That looks like other dots I see on verified coins on Heritage. I ran the number at NGC--it lists the correct coin/grade, no pictures.

No opinions? Well then...I'll put in my .02 I suspect everything's legit, and judging from the pics, it looks closer to MS64 than 63--imo.
