All right, I finally got myself a 1917 Type I Standing Liberty quarter to add to my Dansco 7070 album. After asking the advice of the members here, I decided I didn't really need to get one where the details of the exposed breast on the obverse were crystal clear, as long as I could clearly make out the other things that made the Type I unique (hairstyle, lack of stars on the back, etc.).

I picked this one up for $65:

1917-SLQ-Type-I----How-Did-I-Do?
1917-SLQ-Type-I----How-Did-I-Do?

The seller graded it as fine, but I'm thinking it's closer to a VF20-25, based on the fact that I can clearly make out all the rivets on the shield, the date is clearly visible, and the feathers on the eagle are fairly well-defined. The coin is pretty dark and grungy, but the patterns of grunge make me suspect it may have been cleaned once upon a time.

Anyway, if it really is a VF25, I think I did pretty good (the current value over at numismedia.com is $78). If not, well, it's not like I had to exhaust my son's college education fund for it...

What do you think?

I think I would lean more toward the seller's estimation of Fine. The scratches on both the obverse and reverse do lower it a bit. Nice coin though for your 7070. It's a wonderful set to build.
Rest in Peace

It needs an acetone overnighter for the crud, otherwise F for the scratches.

All right, thanks. I always forget to take into account the scratches, since I have no idea how they actually affect grade/value.

Ah well, so I overpaid a bit. It's still nice to have for my 7070.

I am think it's a F-12. There are a few scratches but the don't seem to be too bad. Still a nice coin.
