I see over and over again people grading coins on here, but I feel that there are 2 different ways to grade a coin....

What I mean is that I see coins graded as "AU55", or "AU55 details". Are these actually different, or the same thing. With AU55 details, are they only grading the coin and ignoring luster, as one might do with a cleaned coin? But then I see a coin graded by NGC "AU55, Improperly Cleaned" or a coin graded by "AU55 Details". As a "newer numismatist" I am confused on this, so if someone could please enlighten me here that would be wonderful.

It is actually quite simple.
When you see just plain AU-55, that means a no-problem Almost Uncirculated -55 coin.
When a grade of AU-55 details is given, that would generally indicate that the coin has very little wear, but there is a problem of some kind, such as cleaning or rim dings. Use of the word details is how we inform another collector that the coin in question has a problem of some kind.

Thank you so much! I couldn't find the answer anywhere! So, would an AU-55 details be worth less than a AU-55. How much of a difference can this affect the coin value?

It depends on the problem-for example a big scratch might bring it down 20%, but a cleaning could bring down 30-40%
But it really depends on the issue.

There is another problem not discussed here and that is who did the grading? There are many dealers that grade a coin and put that on a 2x2 or similar flip. Then there are the professional grading organizations like PCGS or NGC. And then there are those basement TPGS's that are as realiable as the Weather forcasters. To many times I've seen coins graded as MS-60 and/or AU-50 and can't tell the difference.
So if you think your confused, your just one of many.
Or do as I do and use G, F, Unc, or Proof. Occationally a VG, or EF is OK too.

The percentage can vary based on the type of coin and severity, usually a scratch on an otherwise high uncirculated coin can bring the value down as much as 99% if its a coin where the price goes way up in higher MS grades. On low grade key dates, even a moderate cleaning may only make 10% difference.
