Ive been pretty active in going to yard sales and estate sales the past month. I've been purchasing all kinds of things and always look at the jewelry section for silver and gold. I came out with a few good steals this weekend with silver. I know I already posted these finds in another board but just wanted to know how everyone else is doing this year on yard and estate sales.

Nice finds!

Yeah I found a deal last spring at a garage sale, about $80 worth of sterling silver for $13.

I picked up a 76-piece flatware set at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago for $25:

Show-Me-Your-Estate-And-Yard-Sale-Finds.

I knew it couldn't possibly be solid silver (partially because the asking price was so cheap and partially because the sale had been going on for an hour and it hadn't been sold yet), but didn't recognize the mark and figured it was still a nice set for the price even if it was only stainless steel.

Anyway, once I got home and had access to the Internet, I discovered that it was actually an older set of Community "Coronation" silver plate, possibly from 1936. Sets like this seem to be selling for between $175-350 in various places on-line. Not too bad for a $25 investment. Plus, I later found out from my mother that this is the same exact pattern that her mother used to have many, many years ago...

Welcome to the sight and that is some real smart buys and finds there, good job! That silver set is a great score, as the jewelry....

I have been hearing about this dream estate sell from one of my life long friends, via one of his good friends who he has worked with for years. Anyhow, this guy Phil's father was a vintage toy picker, you name it he has it in his basement as the stories go. Well tonight, Dave called me up an said Phil's mother had past recently, and his father past back in 2008. The remaining sisters an brothers are gonna try an divvy it up an have a private auction for me an close friends, then turn the rest loose in an open estate sell, perhaps anywhere from 3 months to a year from now. They are selling it all, house and everything....

Well, when I went down into this basement it was like something right out of American Pickers. The episode where they go back an back through this old under ground room this guy had built in West Virginia over like 30 to 40 years. Bomb shelter like almost....

You know those boxes that are card-board an used for storage of files in offices for example, he had I would guess 500 to 600 perhaps, maybe a 1000. Each box labeled, old Superman, Batman, Terminator, Ghost-busters, G.I Joe, Star wars. Micronauts, and much of which is still mint in boxes, and 100% complete....

Barbie dolls, Corgi cars, Lionel trains out the wazoo, mint in box MATCHBOX cars, from 1940 to 1956, pre Hot wheels days, which forced Matchbox to change from boxes to cards to keep up with the hot wheels fast hotrod themes. A guy on Pawn Stars last night pawned 20 grand worth of these exact Matchbox cars, and one of the old BP gas trucks (with rare grey tires), is worth 1000 bucks, and he had that stinkin truck mint in front of box. I told Dave, see that matchbox truck, I just saw it last night on Pawn stars and it is worth 1 grand! His jaw dropped, lol....

I am a sci fi guy, an have did well with many genres of vintage toys, an then turned those into bigger money, then turned that into silver an gold. So I know all the value of most of these items, like a complete Mego Bridge from the Enterprise for example brings nice money on ebay, if mint an complete. Or the transporter, or just about any Star wars vehicle or figure in its original box. He had I think it was like 14 Millennium Falcons, some loose and some in boxes all priced darn close to accurate retail of today, very impressive hoard....

I am not over estimating when I say there may be a quarter million dollars on vintage items in this corridor basement....

I could NOT buy anything yet unfortunately, but I took my dig camera an notepad, and made a nice crude list of some nice mint Star wars items I collect or Star Trek. Complete items still in boxes, mostly. He even had a wizard of oz MEGO Emerald palace in a box, no telling what that is worth. I can't get it all, so I have to be wise, and pick the best for the best price. I looked for two hours, an scratch the surface, maybe 10 boxes of 100's of boxes. Way to much to take in all at once, my mind is overloaded. Then he said next time he would take me to the garage and show me the majority of the stuff, rof....

I really need to learn more about those trains an different scale cars, as there is literally 100's of diamonds in the ruff in this place, once in a lifetime find....

I need some advice on what to do to get some funds together for this, and how to approach it. I could risk a loan even, as Phil said he would let me have anything at half of retail. Another words if I got 3 grand worth of stuff for 1500, I could sell half on ebay until I had 1500 to pay back loan, then the rest off the top would be all profit. Just an idea, as I will NOT sell any PM's to get any of this. Again it is all just a means of short term collections, then re-sale for profit to get more Pm's....

Sorry for the long winded rant, just a lot of information to absorb in a short time....

Silverhawk I just recently went to an estate sale like what you described. I did go a little crazy buying some stuff there. When I walked in the house I litterally started . It was like a museum in a way nothing newer than 1960s. It had everything from old tools, toys, comic books, silver jewelry, and so on. I spent about 2 hrs there and still never had a chance to go upstairs. I litterally dehidrated from the heat that day. So I had to leave and I went back the next day but they werent having it anymore.. I was going to buy a bunch more stuff. The stuff I bought there were old political buttons for a dollar, one comic book for a dollar, a gold plated knife for a dollar, lead toys (20) spacemen and aliens (BUCK ROGERS) for 12 dollars. and a flyrod and reel from the 1920s for a dollar. But what I wished I would of bought were the vintage boy scout hat from the 40s, couple cast iton toys, and the vintage fish basket from the 1920s. Those items were a little more expensive but I think I could of talked them way down. I guess I just got so hot and had to leave so bummer.

Great deal for you, not so hot of an idea on their part. In general, when heirs sell off estates they get a lot less than they would if they had a reputable company handle the sale for them.

I ran across an estate sale where that wouldn't happen. They had a houseful of stuff nicely laid out, tagged, priced, etc. Everything was priced at triple retail, and I overheard "we were hoping to do much better, this was all he left us."

Hundreds of folks walked through, almost no sales, and buyers were all commenting on the ridiculous prices.

Yeah biggfred you get that. Alot of times people sell antiques at garage sales and estate sales thinking just because its old its worth alot of money. Despite the fact something is old it rarely has a value over 5 dollars. Anything that values over five dollars is considered a nice antique. I've come across numerous places where something is only worth about a dollar and they were selling them for 20 or more. What people dont realize is the market changes drasticly over time, Something could be hot then the next yr its cold. Look at beanie babies for example they were considered hot at one time now they are only worth about a quarter a piece. Now why do people still collect them is beyond me. Its a waste of money because they will never have a value to them ever again. When I go to garage sales etc.... I dont buy something because of it being old or unique. I buy it thinking about now how easy would it be to resell. I've been studying antiques for years and have a fairly good idea what to buy or not to buy. As far as antiques go I'm in it to make money for myself I very seldomly keep anything I buy at garage sales etc...... I'm taking a trip to Erie soon and plan on hitting every garage sale on the way. I should come across some silver and gold (hoping). Ill let you all know how I did if I buy anything at all.

I am not about to post photos in public, but A few years ago, y wife bought a whole box full of costume jewelry at a rummage sale. A few weeks later, she was going through it and showed me two rings that were nearly identical.

Knowing that one practice for the wealthy is to have one real and one fake for public, we had them appraised. The jeweler took one look and his eyes bugged out. He made a phone call an d then told her that the one was a Tiffany diamond ring worth - at that time - three grand!
She spent six bills to have it remounted in a style and size to suit her, and wears it regularly now.

Thats a good buy piffin.

I just got back from Erie and all I found was a silver necklace (with a sterling feather attached to it) out of 4 yard sales. The irony behind that was it was the smallest of the 4 just 2 small tables. I did real good on Thursday but no silver and gold though.

I had a customer bring in a hand carved eagle cane handle. Lady at the yard sale gave it to him. Weighed several ounces, marked 14K, looked and hefted OK.

It gets better. Hand engraved in script was 1820, LT. As the customer said, "I'm still investigating, but if that's Louis Tiffany..."
