I may have sold my Corvette and I am considering buying the 2008 four coin Buffalo sets in Proof and Burnished. Any opinions or thoughts on long term investment potential?

The coin would certainly have fewer maintenance costs!

I know! I have a 30 year old Mercedes. Has a dry sump. Requires 12 litres of oil per change.

Yeah I know about the maintenance. This thing is an 03 Z06 and I can't get underneath it to do any of the work myself. I've had Corvettes for 20 years and I'm finally out of the fast car phase. I'm going to get a Jeep and a fishing boat. I live two miles from Lake Erie and it's just stupid to not be out there fishing every weekend. As far as the Jeep goes I can park it over a swale in my yard and do all of the work myself. While I have the cash I want to get my dream Buffaloes first.

Tough call with gold at this price. Short term I'm sure we see some higher prices but longer term I couldn't say. If you really want them then the choice is easy.

I noticed gold reached about $1910 early in the A.M., but has since pulled back a bit, and last glance it was at $1878....

Part of me says hold out and wait to see if it pulls back, but then if it stays true to its trends of late, I would expect it to start right back up again an go all the way to $1950-75 maybe close to 2 grand before the big dawgs take some more profit an send it back down a couple of more hundred....

If it were me in the end however, if I had enough left over to get the boat an jeep an stay clear of the red/debt, then no doubt I would do the less greedy move as oppossed to wishing/hoping for a pullback (wish in one hand, go to the bathroom in the other an see which one feels up faster as they say), and buy the set, once in a lifetime chance probably to get a set that nice....

Gotta keep in mind as well, moving an item that high in price one day may take a while to find the right buyer, even though there seems to be plenty of deep pockets playing the PM game these days....

My dad once had many Vettes, but one bronze 1982 (last year of the classic design), complete with T-tops, not a mark on it. My dad is major perfectionist, esp with car detailing. Seems like he sold it for 18 to 20 grand, like in 1986....

If it were still mint today with low miles, I would be curious of its value, even though I doubt much more than what it sold for in today's economy. It may bring 25 to 30 today, if it had been locked up an forgotten for the last 25 years, which I seriously doubt happened....

That Vette and a 1972 El Camino pickup, green with twin white racing stripes running across the hood an roof perhaps. Complete with a 454 and a Holley 750 DP. The two family vehicles I wish were never sold....

Can't say I've ever heard that one before! Any idea what that might mean?

Grew up on the shores of Lake Erie (candian side) and Huron, so i'd trade a Corvette for a fishing boat any day :)

I would suggest to buy just the one ounce and not to get everything at the same time. Spreading out the purchases over time would be a nice buffer should gold correct and wouldn't be losing out too much should gold continue to climb. The 2008 Proof Buffalo looks to be a good year though. Much lower mintage than 2009, 2010, and likely 2011.

The only reason I'm thinking about the sets now is that it seems to be mainly numismatic interest. The prices are still the same as they were at $1700-$1800. As far as the Vette for fishing I'm all over that move at this point in my life. I'll be 55 soon and it's much easier to climb in a boat than a low riding car.

Jack, my old friend's father from Still-water Oklahoma used to say that all the time. Accept, instead of saying..."go to the bathroom", he used a four letter word that started with an S an ended with a T. The four letter side fills up faster than the hand you wish in is the moral of the saying I figure, lol....
