I ALMOST bid on the Flying Eagle cent today on ebay, but at the last minute I backed away I need to learn more about FE prices and how damage affects value. So, I present to you all here this Flying Eagle penny that I held off on:

1857-Flying-Eagle-Cent---The-One-That-Got-Away

1857-Flying-Eagle-Cent---The-One-That-Got-Away

The more I look at this coin, the more I'm sorry I let it get away. What caused me at the last minute to back off is the rim damage in two places. How much does this damage impact it's overall value?

What grade would you give it, and what sort of value does it have overall?

Thanks!
Les

I don't see the rim damage. Overall I like the look of the coin and would say VG. I think it was cleaned though based on the reverse.

If you look at the obverse of the coin, there is a slight rim flattening by the "U" in United and the space after the "F" in Of.

I agree with VF Details and an old cleaning.

The rainbow look is from old chemicals toning on the surface... not the coin itself. Its that "oily" color that's the dead giveaway.

So? What do you think it's worth?

Probably $40-50 depending on how much the cleaning bothers you.
Rest in Peace

The iridescent obv suggests some cleaning agent was used, or cleaned and retoned.
On the rev, those dark areas in the wreath bother me. It could be corrosion that cleaning didn't remove.
Coin looks to risky to buy from single photos--imo.

i wouldn't be sorry this got away. old cleaning plus way too much dirt in the devices of the reverse. Not worth $40 in my book.

It sold just a few days ago (not to me, lol) for $60. After hearing all the comments here, I'm glad I held off on it. But now I'm scared I'll make a mistake on the next one. I have much to learn.

The lighter brown and flashy rainbow retoning is a dead give away on a cleaning.
