OK-I broke down and bought the AU55; that sure is alot of $. This will be my most expensive coin to date. It is by far the best price for that coin that I have found. I will post some pics when it gets here......
Haven't taken the plunge yet on a pretty expensive coin; found a NGC 1909 S VDB AU55 BN with a small dark spot on the reverse and some dark areas around the rim on the reverse and obverse. The price is $1275. Is that price about right? Found a PCGS same grade for %1575 that looks a little better. Decisions-decisions---thoughts welcomed. Edited by jprine 09/09/2011 9:14 pm

If I were in your predicament (a nice predicament to be in), I would ask myself, can I live with the spot? If your honest answer is no, then spend a few more Benjamins and go for the coin you really want.
The way I see it, if you're spending over a grand on a coin, a few more hundred for a superior coin shouldn't make a difference. It's the last time you'll have to do it--and just think how proud you'll feel to have that coin.

PCGS housed coins I've noticed are slightly more than a comparable graded NGC coin.

The price is BELOW CDN for a slabbed coin and it's a 55. Spot or not, it's a good deal IMO. Show us some pics.

Congrats on your purchase! I'll soon be in your shoes as I have 18 holes to fill on my Lincoln collection that I worked on from 1969 to 1974, then, started up again last week.

If that's the actual color of the coin, it should be a RB.

So glad that fingerprint is on the holder. Fingerprints drive me crazy and I would never own a coin with a crazy print. Nice pickup!

Quote: GS housed coins I've noticed are slightly more than a comparable graded NGC coin. \This is really true. Many dealers have created this due to always saying things like "Of course this coin costs more, it is in a PCGS slab" Doesn't really mean the coin is worth more, just that the PCGS name is really so popular. And for the price, that 09S VDB is fantastic. I too think it appears to be a lot more Red than noted on the slab. Price wise think of this. Only 484,000 minted and over 300,000,000 people in the USA alone.

Why is that not a RB coin? I'm only assuming that the pictures is off a bit in color. Either that or I really don't know anything about Lincolns.
