I was looking to sell a couple of Canadian mint sets, with 80% silver coins( 64 and 65 ), as I don't have any interest in canadian coins, and was surprised to see that they "regularly" sell for under the melt value of the silver on ebay.

The current melt value is just under $47 yet I see them go for $43 and less consistently. I was semi-thrilled to get $51 each for mine at a local show. And we are talking uncirculated so it isn't like its junk silver at poor/fair/AG grades.

So, are there any other coins you see regularly go for under spot/melt or for so far below the NGC/whatever lists out there it surprises you?

If I were into Canadian coins at all, I think I'd buy these sets up! Seems a good bargain for the silver value alone! They include an 80% dollar, half, quarter, dime. Maybe the years confuse some folks - as canada kept 80% silver longer than we did our 90%( through 66/67 while we only did through 64 ) and then went to 50%(67-68) before alloy - while we went to 40% for halfs(65-70) and select dollars(special collectables 71-76) only.

80% silver is less desirable than 90%, so it's hard to get as good a price, relative to melt.

Agreed. I had my coin dealer offer me 8x face for 80% Canadian, so I sold them on craigslist and got melt.

Seems silly that 80% would be devalued that much. It's not like they give you proportionally less for 40% than 90% - at least the "buyers" at shows I've seen don't treat it that way.

I was "insulted" at a 12X face offer for 80% canadian halves at one shop. But I sold them for 21.5X face when 90% was going at 24.3X a few months ago. But that wasn't uncirculated either - just a roll of circulated halves maybe VF-XF grade.

Foreign issues tend to sell at lower ratio's to melt than U.S. coinage here in the States for some reason.

Most coins shops in this area pay about 60% of melt for foreign silver coins. I know in part because they get less
when they sell them to the big bullion dealers and melter's.

My refiner doesn't pay any less for foreign silver than they do for anything else.....each batch is melted & assayed & they pay accordingly. I have a display case at the local mall & can't sell foreign silver for what my refiner pays. Unless/until I get a large batch of foreign silver I'll continue to sell at the antique mall or here for less than what the refiner pays. No idea what I'd do if I suddenly came across a large batch.

Here's another bargain I ran across. I already have one so have at it.

cheapslabs.com is listing 1943 Steel Pennies NGC MS67 for $60 each - and have like 40 of them. They list for $111 on NGC/Numismedia and $150 on PCGS. Seems a decent deal! I've seen them going for $100-$120 on ebay lately, so $60 seems a good deal pricepoint.
