Ok, I found a 1964 Canadian maple leaf penny at a garage sale today. It is not the standard copper & is non-magnetic. The edge is solid & is not clad. It has a small punched hole through it too. I'm guessing this is a vending machine test coin but I cannot find another or any other looking like this. Anyone have any knowledge here? THANK YOU! -The Scrounger Edited by Scrounger 09/11/2011 01:00 am

I'm guessing the hole is where you attach the string to pull it back out of the vending machine definitely a low tech test token, guess the mint didn't have a large budget in those days,no profitable NCLT coins 'til '67

This wasn't made for collector's, and since vending co's were supposed to return these, I assume they're rare-BUT how about demand?

Hello forum, joined cause of the fabulous forum and also cause I as well have this unique coin from 1964.
Only thing about mine is that it looks nearly mint,no hole in it and its also magnetic, even a weak fridge magnetic is capable of picking this up.
Google shows no hits for a magnetic Canadian penny, shocked I even found this thread as I have been stumped,is this one of the vending machine test coins as well?

I think I may have something similar. A 1957 elizabeth ii silver 1 cent coin.

Nickel plating will make any penny magnetic.

You can find lots of similar examples at flea markets, usually in denominations up to 10 cents.

I do not believe that any vending machine in 1964 accepted Pennies. be it for chewing gum or candies...no pennies. Though, I might be wrong.
