Had the day off yesterday and decided to try my hand at searching a bank box of pennies.

Got some nice surprises!

British penny
Euro Cent
Several U.S.A 2010 and 2009 pennies
Several King George VI pennies (oldest 1941)

Lots of fun.

Happy Hunting

It's funny you mention this now, as today at lunch I'll be popping over to the bank to pick up my first 2 boxes.

Happy hunting indeed, I'm pretty sure my wife thinks I'm crazy (you'd think she'd have clued in by now :-)

Cheers

So how do you go about getting a box of pennies or any coins from the bank? Do you have to order them from the mint and do you have to pay a premium for them or how does it work? And is any bank better to work with than another? I am just curious as at one point I want to start doing the same thing.

Thanks!

I deal with BMO and the process was simple. At the main reception the lady gave me her business card and said that if I wanted to place any coin orders, phone ahead and they will do their best to accommodate them. I did, she did and that's it. It was treated as a withdrawal from my account, IOW face value, no premium.

There is a great thread on this site about roll hunting etiquette, I strongly recommend reading it as it's fairly good.

Hi,
I just walked into the local Royal Bank and ask for $25 worth of pennies and she brought out a box.

I'm thinking maybe I'll try and do one box a month and see what I can find. You never know.

So you didn't have to pay an extra fee? As when I have been at a bank before they have said you have to order it from the mint and pay a fee. Or has everyone's experience been the same about just walking in and asking for a box?

Gowan1982, there was no extra fee. I did have prove that I was client of the bank (bank card).

I'm not familiar with how things usually work. Not sure if I got lucky (with not having to pay a fee?).
I would be interested in finding out from other people's experiences and the banks they deal with.

Good luck! I searched hundreds of boxes of pennies before I lost the copper bug. I've got a new infestation tho..THE SILVER BUG! I now roll search boxes of quarters instead :D SO MUCH FUN! Quarters have a higher ratio of foreign coins...plus theres the ATB collection..but the silver is the best..mmmmm silver quarters..*drooooolll*

so many more varieties and errors in quarters too. although a box is $500..took me awhile before I was able to just have a box of quarters sitting around all the time. But as the wife knows..she can't touch it! and until I have the urgent need for $500..I will continue to search a box a day until I die!

This may be the thread you guys are looking for, how do you take care of your tellars... https://goccf.com/t/72766&whichpage...ms=etiquette

Nice on the first box, I'm sure it will be the first of many! I seem to pull a foreign other then a US coin every few boxes most common being a euro.. Many boxes I also see more wheat's then I do George VI's....

My kids and I have been searching boxes of cents since a few months now. So far we found quite a few king george vi,some forgein coins some wheat cents oldest being 1913, and our two latest and greatest finds a 1926 king george v and an 1889 Indian Head cent. We are still looking for a 2006p magnetic 2006p non magnetic and a 2007 non magnetic. Who knows what will be in the next box.
