Just won off my first coin off a Heritage Auction. A 1814 Classic Head Large Cent. The coin is in an ANACS slab who graded it VG-8 Features - Scratched. The scratch is shallow and small on Liberty's neck and hard to see unless you magnify it. Almost all circulated examples of this short lived series are damaged, most corroded. This one has smooth, uncorroded surface. To me the holder just detracts from it value. The grade is not in dispute and the damage is minor. Think I will crack it out and just enjoy it. Am I nuts?

no, I say crack it out and enjoy it that is why you buy coin for the enjoyment.

If you are going to keep it, crack and enjoy! The slab only helps as a somewhat "objective" grade in my opinion and if you are adding it to your permanent collection, bust it out.

Thanks DJ. Just to expand the topic a little, does it really make any sense in terms of value to slab any 19th century circulated coin where the authenticity is not in question? (The grade assigned to a circulated coin is based on more objective details than an uncirculated coin. Since Uncirculated coins are more subjective as to grade I can see a purpose sometimes in having them slabbed.) I grade from Photograde and experience and when I sell on ebay I grade accurately and conservatively. With a good picture, why would anyone with any experience pay more for a slabbed example of a circulated type coin? Of course from the previous poster who broke all of his out of slabs, there is the enjoyment factor. Colin

if you think you would enjoy it more out of the slab then by all means crack it out, its what ever gives you the most enjoyment from your collection that you should do. Everyones preference is different and thats what makes the world a Great place, if everyone was exactly the same it would get very boring very fast

Crack it out UNLESS there is the possibility you might sell it someday. Slabbed coins (from only the top TPGs - NGC, ANACS, PCGS, and ICG) bring much higher prices than the same coin sold raw.

What Fred said Also, if preservation is important to you, leave it in the slab. I crack out the ones I want to put in an album. I leave the ones slabbed that aren't going in any album.

Break it out and get rid of that plastic. Enjoy the coin, not the holder! I was never sold on ANACS and their "net grading" anyway.

Oh don't get me wrong, I have my higher grade coins in slabs and also the ones that I bought for certain reasons that weren't meant to go in the Dansco7070 that were already slabbed are also in slabs, but if I bought the coin to enjoy it and feel like I could enjoy it better out of the slab I would definately crack it out

I don't know about you, but if it were mine, I'd have to crack it just to hold it in my hand and feel the history. Coins like yours are not meant to be in slabs.

Crack it open, if you want to sell it in the future get it regraded.

Hi Okie-Colin, In that low of grade if it were mine I would brake it out and enjoy it.You already know the true grade of the coin, for me I like to hold a coin in my hands turn it over and study it that is something you just can not do when it sits in a slab.

The only thing useful, IMO, is authentication. As for coin grades they are like Lays potato chips or was it Nachos? "Don't worry we'll make more."
In a year or two there's a good chance the grade will be different anyway.

Crack and enjoy
This is only my opinion, for me I like to enjoy my coins not to watch them through plastic
