Hello,

I just bought this 1881 Morgan dollar and worry that it might not be real because the diameter measured with a caliper is 37.93 instead of 38.1. My Peace dollar measured 38.09, using same caliper. Here is what I know.

-Weight is correct
-Thickness is correct
-Pings (when I tap it with another coin it sounds just like my Peace dollar sounds) Also sound the same against another coin
- Feels like my Peace dollar, gets cold and warm at same rate.
- Not magnetic
- Everything looks right to me

The person I bought it from said the coin has been in an album since the 1960's, but I keep reading everywhere that if your coin does not measure 38.1mm then it is a fake. Please help me, as I do not live close to a coin shop to get it checked out.
Thanks all

Wanted to add that the first 1 in 1881 kind of flashed bright with my camera making it look a little weird. but it looks like the second 1.

Also the edge appears worn as you can see in pics, the lines on the edge of the coin are rubbed away completely on the outside edges of edge, see pic. Could this account for the size diff?

It looks real to me; though I dont collect them, correct me if I'm wrong.

The diameter isn't off so much that I'd be worried, just normal wear.

I think you are within the allowable variation in size. By the way, you might want to be careful not to grab the coin on the faces. You could put a fingerprint on it that you don't see until it darkens the coin a few years down the road.

CALIPERS.. you can buy them any where for no bucks...WHO SAYS they are spot point accurate? in these days we expect common accuarcy for zero bucks. I have them too...your photo's are not good enough to even GUESS if its real or what, in fact I won't,, calipers one thing and then Weight? on what scale?PLease don't confuse me with a put me down. I feel your concern...Most differences can really be seen with a GOOD photo..STRAIGHT ON and CLOSE UP...WE are all here to help. I don't mean to be negative...But poor photo's can not give you accurate advice..

I really didn't post pics of the front and back to be used to judge the coin as I know the pics aren't great, just posted them to show general condition.

The main picture I wanted people to look at is the edge of the coin with the lines on it. As I said before it is worn down some and beat up on the edge and I was wondering if this could account for the diameter measuring 37.93 to 37.95 depending on where I measure due to wear around the edge. Around .15mm low. I set my caliper to .15 and to me it seems so small that it makes sense. I just wanted other peoples opinions. And the caliper I am using has been calibrated recently and is digital and very accurate.

I don't have the slightest worries about a diameter off by such a small amount on a circulated coin. It could have been slot-machine fodder at some point in its' life, which will affect diameter much faster than face wear. Reeding is deep enough to lose that much without appearing *too* worn.
