Found this today while roll searching. I'm guessing this was caused by a grease-filled die? Correct me if I'm wrong. Is this type of error rare/collectible? Thought it looked like a cartoon character.

LOL, Lincoln forgot his dentures The details were removed via excessive die abrading for the purpose of removing a die clash.

I don't think it's grease filled I think it's an over abraded die like Bio and Tim said.

Definitely die polishing that caused this.

Grease Filled Die looks completely different.

WOW! That is REALLY cool looking!

Agree, it's definately over-zealous die polishing. I have a couple missing the neck....I call 'em floating head Lincolns. I would definately call it a keeper. If you're interested in selling it or a trade, send me a PM. I like oddities like this.

Thanks to all of you for explaining what this is due to. BadThad - I think I'll hang on to this one. I'll probably start a collection of oddities myself. Thanks, though. I'll PM you if I change my mind. So, if this is over-polishing of a die, when does someone at the mint notice or care? How long would something like this tend to go on?

Hard to say how long it goes on....until someone notices a problem or the die breaks.

You need to change your profile drdave. As it stands now, you cannot be PM'd. I saw you listed "Professor of Chemistry", I'd be interested in contacting you if you're a chemist.

Strange. I have a valid e-mail address in my profile. Others have PM'd me in the past. Yes, I'm an inorganic/physical chemist. I'll PM you.

Well I tried to PM you and got an error message. Something must be going on that I don't know how to fix.

I just sent you an e-mail message. Got it fixed now.

Well I am so glad to see this coin. I also have one! Mine has the same mouth. Looks like Lincoln is screaming. Mine also appears to be missing the bridge of his nose a little bit more then yours does. I've gone through tons of rolls and this one is the oddest I've found yet.
