I believe the top of Miss Liberty'd head and the single tail of her hair would indicate that its a 1916.

I think it would only go PO1 as far as the grade ebay has one up right now that is comparable and it is graded PCGS PO1

PlumCrazy, I have the same edition of the RedBook and I think you may be confused. They show a representative of the 1916-17 Variety 1 coin and below that is a representative of the 1917-30 Variety 2. What we are debating here are the subtle differences between a 1916 Variety 1 and 1917 Variety 1, NOT 2. Under the Variety 1 section they do show the bottom of a 1917 Var 1 allowing you to see the difference between the base of the robes between a 1916 and 1917, but they do not show the reverse of each.

I agree. There is no way to tell the difference between a 1916 and 1917 type 1 by the reverse. You need the obverse die markers.

The example Moe posted has much stronger details overall imho and should grade at least a full grade higher. It has a full obverse rim unlike the PCGS example, and much more of the star and lettering on both the obverse and reverse visible. However, though none of the edge cuts are significant by themself, I think that since there are so many of them along with some toned over reverse scratches, this coin would likely result in a details grade. The surfaces on the PCGS example are much cleaner.

Story? Anyone? Story? I was excited when I got a Type 1 1917 from a bunch I bought from a coworker for melt. Dateless, maybe a PO2 but I was so excited to get one none the less. Ummm, story? It really is a nice coin. Have I asked about the story lately? (Edit for grammer)

Hey Johnny, that was the one I was referring to. Moe's does have a little more detail, but when factoring the rim nick and scratches , I thought the coins were comparable overall gradewise. Bottom line is that any 1916 SLQ is worth owning , I was just thought with the ebay coin being so close in condition it would be educational to bring it ito the discussion.
