hahahaha....yes, I am due. Any update on yours or still digging for those drummers? Do you have a new "What it is?"
I'm really hoping to nail down some info on my token, still haven't gotten too far on it inspite of my last adventure visiting the hacienda it reportedly came from.
I have been checking out the auctions that are listed for the show...wish I could be there on Thursday for the bidding! May have to just settle for a preview on Wednesday if I can arrange it.

The boys in the band are doing fine, they just don't where their're going....And I don't either.. harrison2.. as a matter of fact, yes I do have a new " What Is It "..coming in the mail..It is a medieval seal. Will make a proper post after I get it with some good pictures..I've been trying to brush up on my Latin to transalte what it means. I have found that the word SIGILLVM means " Seal Of " and then usually the name of the person, title etc are after that word. It should be here in about 3 weeks.

I have always wanted to go to that show but never had a chance. Someday I will!
Theres a few places I'd like to visit in the Mexico City area like Chapultepec Castle, El Zocalo, Lake Xochimilco and the Museum of anthropology so I'll have to plan someday.
If you go have fun and don't forget to post any neat finds!

Midievil seal? oooooh....that does sound interesting! I like it! Now, can I ask, when you say seal, do you mean the device used to create the seal, or the actual wax seal itself?...3 weeks? Is it being sent from the dark ages themself? ;)
Yes, I'll be digging through the junk bins for an odditie or two and scouring for unattibuted mystery coins, tokens, etc...
RealPeso, that's a pretty good destination list...I have been here near the city a year and a half now and haven't been to ANY of those! Don't worry, I'll be toting my camera and plan on taking some photos for everyone. (Though I wonder if there is even much interest.)
I found the program for the upcoming show, there is going to be an auction on Thursday...aside from the expected numismatic items, there will also be documents signed by famous people of history including king Carlos III from the late 1700's...for some reason, I'm really looking forward to the auction.

Yes it is the actual seal itself in mirror (reverse) image. I have some molding putty and plastic coming in to make a mold and then some plastic seals of this image.
3 weeks shipping ?.. Yes for what ever reason from the US the seller does his job but the postal service can take a long time, it usually averages 2 - 4 weeks. Had one envelope go around the world and finally arrived 3 1/2 months later ( I sent back the refund the seller gave me ) Shipments from over seas have been the best for me as they only average 8- 12 days.

Your pain is understood. I'm still waiting almost 90 days on a shipment to the US from the UK...I'm thinking it's a lost cause, too late to dispute the sale.
I'm curious about your seal, do you know if they used wax on it? (like the red wax we see in the movies etc) Or maybe even clay?

As promised: To get to the coin show: hop on a bus that is more like an oversized bread box on a skateboard with what sounds like a blown 350 chevy drag racing through break-neck traffic over the potholes that EAT a small car (seriously). Get on the metro where the blind sell pirated CDs of music that is proudly sampled for you at ear-bleedingly high levels. Past the guilded lady that is seen on so many Mexican coins Where a group of 15 year olds are celebrating a quinceanera in none other than a streatch Escalade... Until you reach the Hotel Del Prado, where there are a thousand teens on the main floor, for some sort of mystic card collecting/role playing show. Humm...then upstairs to this: Only to find some fake coins: Just kidding. These were just for SwamperBob...and I started my trip of in a bad part of town, that's why the bus was so rough. Also, the show was GREAT. Small, but great. There were stacks of 8R from the 1800s, lots of gold on display, not a drop of platinum, and plenty of other other high-grade and rare coins that we just don't see that much of in the US, like a cup full of msc cobs, all for the low price of $15/each. Sorry I didn't take photos of those or the thousands of other on display!

Awesome pictures Harrison!
Reminded me of the good old days riding on the "micros". You gotta hang on tight because there's a lot of jerking around and bumps on those things especially with all the gears that the "microbusero" flies through! That's funny how he has a bunch of different foreign flags.
The coin show looks like fun, I imagine what a great selection of 8 Reales they must have had.
Did you pick anything up?

First photo - is that an About Uncirculated (though I know U.S grading standards can be more liberal than elsewhere), or an about Good?
In all seriousness, thanks (also to jfransch) for the posts about the show and its auction. Honestly, you couldn't pay me enough to go to a coin show in Mexico (I swear, what were there, 3 or 4 stories this week about severed heads being found Mexico... INCLUDING one instance in Mexico City, which is scary since the capital has been relatively insulated, it seems). Glad you made it in/out safely... It really $ucks that people have to live with that threat hanging over them.
A couple questions:
A) Are "better" milled 8 Reales (Pillar and/or Portrait and/or Cap & Ray) commanding the same strong prices there as they are here in the U.S.?
B) "Cup full of misc cobs for $15/per"... DOOOOO be specific! What was in there - like what denoms. and in what condition?
One specific question... did you happen to notice any 1730 dated cob 8R? Other than that, were there any other really nice Mexican cob 8R (i.e., dated and/or superior strikes)

BTW, regarding the auction associated w/the show... seems like kind of contrast with the report of cheap cobs at dealers' tables. I think a lot of the older colonial material was pretty optimistically priced... and I think the numerous unsold lots (listed on that website) reflects this.

Good questions...sad to say, that the cobs weren't what was catching my attention.
Yes I did pick up a mellinial proof libertad...but that was it. I did see some very nice NGC slabbed cobs and some other high-doller 8R. I don't know about being optimistically priced, I saw a few of the final prices on items and some fetched far more than was expected, while others didn't sell at all.
Regarding the cup full of cobs, I really couldn't tell you other than to say, he had a LOT of cups full of all sorts of wonderful things. I got lost in the peso section and was enjoying the ride. He had cobs, hacienda tokens, improvised war era coins (1810) from the jungles and just about anything you wanted, all for a flat per piece price. The cobs were smallish, the crosses were clear but they were probably of the 1R and 2R variety. Sorry I didn't pay more attention to them. I'm not kidding when I say I was distracted by the piles of R8 being sorted and sold. They have a REAL distict ring to them. That and the Mexico Mint's table...plenty of 1kilo, 12oz, 5oz, 2oz coins...gold. You name it, it was there. American, Mexican, European, colonial...will say that asian, south america and US non-bullion wasn't too well represented.
Well, that's about it for now. Have a good one!
