Poll Question
A while ago, I posted this coin, an MS-64 1881-S Morgan silver dollar, in the Classic Coins Grading section. At the time, the pictures were much lower quality and were of a lower resolution. I am curious as to if this were to be resubmitted on any given day, whether or not this would be upgraded or graded under a PL status, or even DMPL.

These photos I have taken are in a much higher resolution and hopefully will be good enough to make a much more accurate estimate.

I would like to see your opinions as well.

No way it would make it and you're lucky it got a 64. I'll buy it if you no longer want it.

Just kidding, That is a pretty coin, I voted 64 PL because I don't know the difference between PL and DMPL. I think the cheek mark would keep it from going 65.

To reach PL, you're going to need to be able to clearly read reflected 12pt newspaper type at a minimum distance of 4-5" from any point in both obverse and reverse fields. Make that number >8" for DMPL. Any "haziness" anywhere will probably disqualify the coin from a Prooflike designation.

It's an easy, high-end 64, though. The scrape in the obverse field near 8:00 keeps it from 65.

Too bad about the scrape. Great looking coin regardless!

Pretty coin!

From the angled shots, I think I see too much haze for even PL. And to me, if it didn't have one or the other of the obverse scrapes, it'd be a lock for 64. If it didn't have either, it'd be a lock for 65+. But with both, the reverse is extraordinary and carrying it to 64.

I'd say both sides are semi-pl. That's a beauty! =)

(all this with a grain of salt, I don't know much about Morgans, but I'm learning!)

Just a comment about DMPL coins. The show I went to last week I showed a dealer a PCGS slabbed 1884 cc MS64 DMPL The coin has very deep mirrors and a light gold toning. He said this wouldn't go DMPL with today's grading standards, they won't give the DMPL grade any more without the deep black and white contrast.
Just a thought.
