This just occurred to me ... and you may be interested in following this thread if only out of morbid curiosity.

I have a 1902 Liberty nickel that I almost tossed in with the scrubs I sold last week, but aside from having been heavily "thumbed" in the past and it has an un-natural look to it. I will post a picture of it as it is now ... and I am going to carry it in my pocket for about a week.

It was too "meaty" to toss in with the junk, but it's bugged me for a long time.

I'm sure that there are folks who will think of this as "manipulating surfaces" ... or "doctoring", but if that's what it is ... ALL circulated coins have been doctored and sport manipulated surfaces.

It's just an experiment. Let's see what happens.

Chance

I'll try and get better pictures a little later, but here's our victim.

Failing that, bury it in the back yard for a few months.

That would probably enhance the value of my 1880 Shield nickel ... but that ain't gonna happen.

I do not think any reasonable person could consider turning a coin into a pocket piece as "doctoring", it is probably the most natural thing you could do to a coin.
Rest in Peace

I'm "uncleaning" a British halfpenny now. It's in my window sill, and later will probably end up in my pocekt too!

This is the coin I'm un-cleaning. It had some infernal black stuff around the devices that acetone wouldn't touch, and which is only partially apparent in the original pictures.

I decided that the crud had to go.....

After hours of soaking in acetone did basically nothing ... I soaked it for better than 24 hours in a solution of 50% ammonia and 50% water and used compressed air to remove that stuff. I was going to carry it around in my pocket for a week or so, but the ammonia soak took the polished appearance away.

The poser? ... Do you see blatant and irrefutable evidence of cleaning?

It'd never slab ... but who would slab a VF-35 Liberty nickel anyway? It bothered me more when it had the polished appearance than it does now.

I may still carry it around for a few days.

much less grainier than the first photo's....do you think the solution, erased the lines? or the crud that highlighted them?

These pics were taken under incandescent light which is why the appearance is so different. It's dark ... and the others were taken in full on natural light.

It looks good in hand though. I do think the ammonia soak obliterated the lines some though.

I guess it's always going to be a doctored coin, but it was before I started. The difference is that it looks more natural, and I like it better now.

The die chip (in the 2) is rather interesting in that it appears on the 1902 DDO ... but no evidence of doubling on this coin.

It'd be interesting to see pictures in the same light, if you're so inclined and have the chance. =)

I wouldn't put it in your pocket. It looks almost prooflike with those unmarked surfaces. Put it in an envelope with some kitchen matches on a sunny and tone that puppy.

Looks very nice to me. I bought a bag of 300 or so V nickels at an auction a few years ago. They were sort of blackened and sticky so I put them in a rock tumbler with some water and let them go. The stickyness went away but they developed an unnatural shine to them. Good thing they were average circ to good so I did not hurt their value.
