I think there is a very good possibility that you have a 1799. I have compared it to several pictures of genuine 1799's and diagnostically, looks pretty good. I would sent it to ANACS.

IMHO it is not a 1799, it does not match any of the three known dies for 1799. The alignment of Liberty is off for Breen 1 & 2 and the date spacing is off for variety 3.

Sorry to cause false hope, but I dont think its a '99 overdate after looking at the varieties for that year. Penny Whimsy doesn't list any reverse cracks for this overdate and the variety this could have been (S-188) Has a HEAVY die break on the upper right of the obverse. Unless this is another example of a 1799 NC-1 (highly unlikely), its just a regular ole 1798  I dont have time right now to look through the die varieties for 1798 (theres like a bajilion), but I might later. I like this kind of stuff  |

The 1st picture looks like a 1798 and the 2nd picture has too much glare tell...

Think the thrill is gone on this one. Here's one with what appears to be a later strike with the same reverse die crack. Sometimes chicken - sometimes steak - sometimes potted meat with no crackers! It's all good! Paleoguy http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPER-NICE-...em3f0de9d985 |

Sorry Paleoguy, I blew it. There's a 1799 with the exact reverse die crack, but mirror image. My brain got confused, I should have double-checked myself.
This is a 1798, S-166. Not a 9/8 variety. A fairly common '98, I should have known.

Yep that heavy die crack on the left side of the reverse instantly identifies it as S-166. The S-188 overdate does have a similar crack on the right side in later states. That rev die was then used to strike 1798 S-186. I have seen a fake 1799 made from a S-186. that could be a real fooler because it has the correct reverse.
