This series of RAISED, parallel lines were spotted last night on this 1971-S Proof IKE...the coin has the DDO-O22, CPG FS-106 spread, and is a monster
DDO...reading about it in the IKEGROUP.ORG's new book, "Collectible IKE varieties Facts, Photo's & Theories", Lulu Press, 2011, it states there are numerous burr cuts on many letters, which are present...these cuts, it is theorized, were made during hubbing, by the Janvier Lathe cutting process, which transfers the original IKE galvano onto a Master Die, and, then to early working hubs, then to working dies. The IKE group suggests the mint workers did not bother to abrade, or, hammer out the scalloped cut marks, on these early "Test" product hubs, that were called Master Dies, later versions of these dies, they suggest, were cleaned up, or, a finer cutting tool was used, removing the cuts present on many DDO-O22 coins, as the work progressed into cleaner coinage...The thinking is these early die trail strikes were somehow considered good enough quality, that they ended up for inclusion in shipping stock?...an interesting theory, for sure...
So, I wrote Rob Ezerman, Lead Author of the new IKE book, sent these photo's of the lines running from D to O in Dollar, on reverse, and, he had never seen them before, perking his interest..he thought they may be something related to the Lathing on these die trails...
Curious what members think here...1 line is INSIDE the D, the rest are outside..there are some polished out lines running from the O, towards L, and, thin ones running backwards, from the N, in ONE, back to the O..can try and shoot pics to add.... The fact that they are parallel, and, equidistant, gives a small hint they may be "Lathe Lines"...
Thanks
